Title: Simple Bat Wing Pivots
Post by: No Bull on May 14, 2012, 11:39:40 PM
Here is a rudimentary video highlighting some simple but very effective bat wing pivots (sorry ahead of time for the poor quality).

This design uses a couple custom brackets that can be made from scrap metal and a couple male threaded rod bearings.  Some nice features of this design is the smooth and very strong pivot that can be adjusted up and down by adjusting the threaded ends of the bearings.  Because the bearing is a "ball and cup" design, there should never be any binding in the pivot action and it can be easily greased.  Removing and installing the wings just involves taking the lock nuts off of the bolts that run through the bearings and sliding the wings forward and out of the bearings.

Let me know how this works out for you if you decide to reapply it.

Thanks,

Chris

Wont there be a problem once the frame is mounted to the wing though? Once in place, the wing has less than 1/4" forward or backward space in order to slide it out of these pivots. The thickness of those pivots look to be about 1/2" thick, plus the extra thread sticking out to apply the nut. You would need at least a 3/4" gap between the leading edge of the batwing and the surface it lines up with.

Let me see if Jeff will send me his CAD drawing for the exact placement of the bolts that go through the bearings on the underside of the frames on the wings.  I know he had to play with this a little and eventually got it right.  The gaps look nice and the wing tucks under a little like an OEM wing does.  Here is a video that I posted in another thread that shows the wings in action:

If you need more pictures or measurements, let me know and I'll grab them while I'm at his shop.

He took a little bit of a break from his build,  but I'm on him almost every week to get his car finished.

He's about 80% done.

Yeah...his build and personal help is what motivated me to begin my own project.   Very outstanding guy with incredible skills.   I hold him and his build in high respect.

And to keep with this thread....he did a very clean and simple job of making the batwings functional.  Very smooth.

Not my shop and I am not responsible in any way for the music in the video.  LOL!

I was there yesterday and took some really good pictures and measurements of everything and I'll replace the video with this information later today.

I'm running a little late on this but here are all the details from Jeff's car.  I've decided to keep the video up since it's already there and not hurting anything (but your eyes and ears).  :)
