Title: dual arm wipers
Post by: Tallon on May 23, 2012, 05:14:24 PM
I saw ralley posted this on his youtube channel and thought they looked pretty good and I don't see too many people doing this but I've been interested in having oem style wipers but there's no info out there on them. I wonder if anyone knows a good wiper to start with on fabricating custom ones. I've never seen these in person to know how they're designed and what rules they require in order for them to work if we were to make our own. Maybe they're as simple as they look I don't know lol

Does the motor still only control the one pivot point?
Title: Re: dual arm wipers
Post by: jb1 on May 24, 2012, 11:32:31 AM
yes ,  the motor controls  1 pivot point   the   2nd arm connects   near the  wiper linkage,  It has been awhile  but  one of the forums  had a post  with measurements of where the 2nd arm mounts ,  maybe  Murci Me will know and post measurements of where the 2nd mounts

Are most gm wipers the same as the 6000?
I don't know if I've ever seen one :S
Thanks

i am not sure , i would guess as long as you  found  a wiper that would  clear hood   or right  curvature  you could use any wiper arm.   someone on other  site   showed using  a wiper arm off of   a Masserati Quadraporte,  good luck  not sure if that car is in states or not,

Have you guys ever considered the wiper arm from a 2012 Toyota Yaris? Thats what I will be using in my build.

Good find, here's a better shot. It's pretty darn close. One would just need the wiper transmission/motor, wiper arm, wiring skills, & they're all set.

This picture above is taken from my site. These are the measurements I used on the yellow 6.0. Only the one arm is doing the driving. Here are some more details for a successful wiper movement.

I used threaded rod for a section of the drive rod so I can adjust the sweep of the pivot lever accurately.

I cut the lever at the pivot and added adjustment via a 1/2" bolt and nuts. This way the wiper sweep distance can be shortened or lengthened.

Some finished pictures. I made a carbon fiber deflector by laying up the CF on 2.5" ABS plastic tubing and then trimming to shape. It is not a replica deflector but I think it looks ok.

I am curious what everyone is doing if they are using Fiero based kits for the wiper arm installation since the brake fluid reservoir is in the way. Also how is everyone installing the wiper motor.
The reason I ask... I have some wiper motor relocation kits that I found in my stuff that I purchased from IFG if any one is intrested.

I guess we could make it run off some other motor instead? I don't know how these work. Arm isn't too expensive, though, and comes with the washer  ::thumbup

No prob Tallon. I would think any Toyota motor would work, plenty of those around on e-bay. Have to do a little more investigative work to see if it will.

I found out from John Watson that the arm on the Yaris is 22” and that the wiper blade is 28” which are the same dimensions as the original murcie’s.  He has an original Murcielago arm and he went to compare it to the Yaris one at a dealership and said that they look really close to each other.

Just to keep the members all on the same page when working on their wiper systems, the wiper is called an "Articulated" wiper arm.  It can be set up to work any blade angle and "Park" horizontally at the bottom of your windshield.  Jim

Yup, and look completely different than the Yaris blade/arm

Could you use a Murci blade on the Yaris? And from what I have seen the base of the Yaris wiper arm is the only thing noticeably different from the Murcie...
Title: Re: dual arm wipers
Post by: Murci-Me on July 17, 2012, 11:24:22 PM
You're not looking close enough, or because you dont have the two side by side you cant see the obvious differences. If you're looking for a wiper thats close, just about all the articulated arms are close enough. If you're looking for something accurate, you either have to buy the Murcie arm, or build one yourself. Some people are building kitcars, and some are building replicas. Its all about what works for the builder.

I don't think not having a perfect wiper is going to prevent it from being a replica

I have the following wiper arms I bought them for my build but will not be using them. They work better for the Murci. They are Maserati wiper arm. I payed $200 each for them, if any one is interested please shoot me an email, I have 2. I am still curious what everyone is doing for the wiper motor install on there Fiero based kits since the brake fluid reservoir will get in the way. Please post pic

Just a couple of pics of the wiper system I have installed. This uses the LP640 aero wiper blade and requires small modification of the wiper arm length. I like it , looks man enough for the car ::toothy

That is an Audi A2 wiper arm , blade and mounting. The two arms are 10mm to long so means removing the pivot assembly out of the end and then cutting the arms down and re-inserting the pivots/wiper mount.

Yes, UK builder . I think I am a bit on my own over here doing a spaceframe build.

Got this from the yard and at only $20.00 for the wiper arm and transmission you can't beat it.  It came from a 1993 Lexus LS400.  Dimensions are very similar to the Murci, it doesn't look exactly like it but I think if you wanted to modify it, it would be a good starting point.

Another arm that is pretty close too is the 1970-1981 Camaro driverside arm.
It fits the Fiero pivot also.
