Title: Building my own 670 kit
Post by: lp670mike on July 15, 2013, 11:35:34 AM
Hi guys,

Don't post much here but I do check in frequently.
Just thought I would post some pics of my project that I am working on. I am building plugs for the 670 kit.

So far I am just about done the rear wing, wing struts, and the rear bumper.

The plugs are made out of mostly particle board and foam.  I will then glass the pieces and body work them.  Then finish them in an epoxy primer.

I started with a 3d cad model of the 670 and scaled it in auto cad then created templates to transfer onto the particle board.

The process is actually going a lot quicker than I thought. only have a bout a week into it so far.

Pretty cool! ::thumbup

What are you planning to do for body panels? I am particularly interested in the front bumper and front fenders as I am thinking of using the LP670 versions in my build.

Thanks for the good words.
The material that I am using is 3/4" particle board. It is pretty easy stuff to work with.
It is pretty cheap also 22 bucks for a 4'x8' sheet

I am still waiting on my rear quarter panels and exhaust bonnet to finalize the fitment on my parts.  Going on 2 years now and I still don't have a complete body. At this point I am waiting for the rest of my body parts before I go any further with this project.

Thanks,

Hey guys started working on my front
Bumper last week. Its in really rough stage
Now. I was playing around with maybe
Doing a variation of the 670 but making it
More of an original design. Just wanted to
Some opinions. Again its very rough at this point
And I could still go 670 replica. Just trying
To decide. Let me know your thoughts.

Thanks
Mike

Thanks guys  I am still debating wich way to go
With this.
I will put up some more pics next week.
The material I am using is a green dry floral foam
From the craft store. The nice part is you can fiberglass
Right on the foam and the foam will not melt

Really? I've used that stuff it's so delicate, nice for carving but I thought the resin did melt it :S maybe depends what you use?
The bumper shape looks amazing I'd love to do this
Nice idea making a bottom template to sit on

Title: Re: Building my own 670 kit
Post by: lp670mike on December 14, 2013, 06:39:17 PM
Hey Tallon,
I will go out to the barn tomorrow and see what brand the foam is.
I used it on my 670 wing buck and had no problems putting fiberglass on it.
Maybe there are different types, not really sure. It is super easy to shape though.  I just hot glue the blocks together and go to town with saws and sanding blocks.
Title: Re: Building my own 670 kit
Post by: Tallon on December 15, 2013, 12:41:54 PM
Are you using gp polyester or epoxy resin
Title: Re: Building my own 670 kit
Post by: lp670mike on December 15, 2013, 07:24:26 PM
Yeah I used poly resin for the wing buck
Maybe thats why I had no issues. I plan on
Using epoxy resin when I make the molds and
Parts.

Hey guys back with a little update.
Its too cold to do any fiberglass in my
Shop so the bumpers and wing are at a
Stand still until spring so I decided to see
What I could do with the engine bonnet.
To about a day of layout and staring at
Pictures but I think I am off to a good start.
Pretty sure the factory designed theirs off
Of a murcie bonnet too. It all layed out
Perfectly once I figured it out. I will start chopping
It up this week.  Enjoy! ::beers

Title: Re: Building my own 670 kit
Post by: lp670mike on March 01, 2014, 03:33:48 PM
No problem.
If you hang in there a few more days I can make you some paper templates which will save you
a lot of time figuring out all what I just did. Once it is lined out and trimmed it shouldn't be to hard
to add the new fiberglass pieces.  I am going to use flat FRP sheeting cut all my new pieces, scuff everything up with a sanding disc on a 90 deg. die grinder. Then panel bond all the parts together.
when set up I will flip it over and laminate the whole thing again in fiberglass. I am going to have a glass shop make the hexagon windows out of 3/16" tempered glass.

Here's what I have come up with so far, in a psd at actual size
once I get the overall dimensions correct I should be able to get them for each piece

window ledges aren't outlined in this
Title: Re: Building my own 670 kit
Post by: lp670mike on March 08, 2014, 02:59:46 PM
Lookin good dude! I started trimming mine this week
I will post some pics of where I am at tomorrow. I made my hexagon
Windows all the same with 7" equal sides. I kept going
Back and forth looking at pics, wasn't sure if they
Were actually different sizes or it was just an optical
Illusion?
Title: Re: Building my own 670 kit
Post by: Tallon on March 08, 2014, 03:41:33 PM
I was thinking they jump down a size each one just slightly but it's hard to tell. I'm using a sky view pic of the lp670 and cropped the hatch portion. The hatch is on an angle obviously but not sure how much it affects the image.. Doesn't seem like much because if you measure them all length-wise they're basically the same, just different width. Or so I thought :S

Boxes abc are all the same size in the picture and the intersecting lines show the windows as different width
Title: Re: Building my own 670 kit
Post by: BigPines on March 08, 2014, 06:48:51 PM
Yes Tallon, you are correct. The windows are larger toward the roof and smaller toward the tail end. I have estimated the measurements in the attached image based on my 1:10 scale model. I don't know how accurate the model is but it looks very accurate and it should at least give you an idea of general proportions.
Title: Re: Building my own 670 kit
Post by: Tallon on March 08, 2014, 10:42:42 PM
I matched them all up to my outlines I had and most of them are dead on or pretty close
two of them are off within an inch or more
The length can easily be obtained from an oem hatch, the top measurement that is off I'm not sure about

Maybe this should be split up into a new thread, I don't mean to hijack just sharing ideas :)

look at width on long boxes and height on tall boxes.

I was thinking along the same lines too.
But the more pictures I looked at I started to
Question if they were the same or not. Check out this
Pic to me the windows look the same size. Also
I was looking a a pic of the bottom of the engine
Bonnet and it looks like the fiberglass supports
Are all the same size and shape?

interestingly enough.... each of the three to purchase are the same price... though they do have three different part numbers...
 429827631C
 429827632C
 429827446C
and the magic price would be a smashing $2,663.14  each !!
or, you can get the whole collection in one easy to buy price of just $5,428.66 !!
just imagine the savings buying the complete set !!
get two...they're small !! ::duh

If you look at that photo, it is heavily distorted by the lens used (almost like a fish eye lens). The perspective and the lens distortion give an optical illusion that the windows are the same size when they are not.

Post by: Tallon on March 09, 2014, 09:46:07 AM
I drew the same to-be intersecting lines on those reference pics as well and it still shows they're different sizes. (won't bother posting those)
They just look the same by eye since they only differ slightly on each side. You can also just put two pieces of straight paper up to your screen and see. Human eyes are not good at seeing these small differences.

I'll just wait to see how this compares to Strings dimensions...

look at width on long boxes and height on tall boxes.
I re-measured the top piece and it is actually 380mm (picture fixed) which gets a lot closer to your measurement. I also found one of the 160mm was in fact 170mm and changed that. Tough to get these measurements on a 1:10 scale model. I verified the length was in fact correct.
Title: Re: Building my own 670 kit
Post by: Tallon on March 09, 2014, 11:37:28 AM
Oo we might be measuring two different things at those slants, ah well
That top piece was the main thing - I moved it up until it turned into 15"
I wonder if the scale model's hatch is longer than the real hatch? 53.49mm difference from what I got :S

taking into account the body panel gaps , that are filled in on a cad model , this model is actually quite close 5mm or so to when I measure an actual part.
So what I have done is take measurements from the model , redraw them next to the panel - rounded up slightly , and used the angles measured and come up with these glass panels . I have then overlayed them back ontop of the engine bonnet and look good.
The car model is not mine and I respect (c) , but the glass panels I will upload here, with a couple of pics to show the size differences. :)

Forgot this front view - bonnet open pic..

Yes, String is an asset to this site and is very generous with the info he has.

String, I am not saying your measurements are not correct but I am very interested where you got your drawings/plans. Can you divulge the source? Are these OEM or a video game model or what? If they are OEM, how can we purchase/obtain this information?

Thanks bud.

And a couple more. The hardest part was creating all of the compound curves in the pieces. The parts I started with were just flat mdf. I had to make cuts and miter the pieces in multiple dirrections then bond everything back together. Along with completely dicing the the 640 bumper. That was the point of no return lol.
