Title: Shift knob
Post by: SchulzeA on June 03, 2012, 12:03:45 AM
Working on a shift knob and found this Gaslock knob. Not that you need a display to know what gear your in, but pretty cool.

Now if you could some how just integrate that display into the dash, that would be cool ::headbang, similar to the OEM unit

Pretty cool, I wouldn't mind that even though we wouldn't really be looking at it. Still a cool feature that you wouldn't see in most cars.

I’m working on something like this. I’ll be using some microcontrollers and four switches. My plan is for there to be no programming by the user. It should be just as easy as installing the switches, the controller board, and LED board.
I do need some help from you guys. What is the size of the gear indicator that is in the OEM gauge cluster?
And while I’m programming the chips, do you guys think a backup camera would be useful?
Any advice and/or suggestions you guys have would be helpful and appreciated.
I’m still just in the design phase, so this might take some time to complete and I will do my best to keep everyone up to speed on it.
Thanks for your help!

I would totally be interested in this and I would definitely like a rear view camera in my car.  This is and option that I have been looking for when I buy the car stereo,

I'm not sure on the exact oem size but I think one like this would work

A back-up camera would be very useful. I can't imagine you can see much from inside the car without one.

I do, but I want to be able to see what gear I am in on the dash.

I can understand wanting to be sure what gear you are in with paddle shifters but if you have a conventional shift lever, it should be obvious.  Having the gear selection displayed is a nice feature but, for the purists, that isn't factory equipment and finding an appropriate location for the display might be hard considering the lack of space on the dash.
The back up camera is very nice.  I have one that shows up on my radio screen whenever you shift into reverse.  The radio has all the provisions to connect.  I also have a manual switch to turn on the back up camera whenever I want, even when going forward.  The switch does NOT light the backup lights.
