Title: G28 coupe to 640 roadster
Post by: Havemurci on March 01, 2015, 04:19:59 PM
In an effort to give back and get advice at the same time I am posting the progress of my build. This car started life as an early G28 coupe and mission creep has pushed it to it's current state. While it's too late for a blow by blow, this is the starting point. I have since cut the top off and am now building a soft and hard top, sewing up seats and so forth.

The starting point of the roadster and beginning of the top. I used the frame of an old folding chair and cut and welded it on the coolest setting of the mig to keep from burning through and made the rear removable bow.
The frame was made from aluminium rods and slats and hinges and conduit bits from the local home center, the front bow is brake line with a welded on male tab that inserts into a slot in the top of the windshield frame.
The idea is to make it light, weatherproof and foldable so it will fit in the trunk.
Each of the aluminum cross bows will be stitched into the top.
the sides of the top will be held down by Velcro like the system used on the OEM roadster.
It will use removable headers that attach to the windshield frame with a tab and secure behind the door with a seat belt buckle.

Very nice to see another build on here! No matter what you do, good or bad, it will be a help to everyone in my opinion! No idea is a bad idea, don't be afraid to fail, and people may learn something from you, and vise versa! I wish more people I hear from would post there builds up here!

Keep on Keepin on!!!  ::wave

I noticed, that my local Home Depot has small square tube in stock.

I saw that too...I figured that the flat bar stock would be able to slide past each other   when it folds up like scissors.
OEM uses  round  tube stock  and a joint that  can collapse but I wasn't able to find something  like  that and I'm not sure how to engineer that on my own.
I reasoned that most the time I see a convertible  going down the highway the air was pulling up on it and securing it to the frame and the car would be the biggest problem.
And thanks Purple, that 670 is looking sweet.
