Title: crazy aventador build
Post by: merodeador74 on March 10, 2015, 10:57:53 AM
So the aventador is my dream car and after doing a lot of research I realized I didn't have the money to even buy a body kit. So I decided I wanted to build it myself, from scratch. Here is what I have so far. I would appreciate any input as is the first time I attempt something like this, I'm sure a lot of you guys have lots of experience

Here are some more pics, I test fitted the rims to get a feeling of the size

Wow, you got a lot of work ahead of you. You are coming along nicely. But the body is only a fraction of the process.  If you cannot afford to buy the body kit what are your plans for the chassis? Suspension? Lights? Glass?

How did you scale that up? Is that all by eye?

I used to be an architecture student so I know how to scale up objects, I've also studied graphic design, basically I'm working with a small scale model that I have broken into pieces and projected onto my wall using a projector, I measured the wheels (20") and kept the projector in place and that way all pieces stayed at a 1:1 scale size, I know its not 100% accurate but its the closest I can do. I traced the parts on cardboard cut them and hot glued them together. This is kind of a long process but it will give time to save money and figure out the rest of the project

I really appreciate the positive feedback I can't wait to finish it. Everyone said I was crazy until they saw it come together lol. I believe if you really put your mind to it anything can be accomplished

Wow!  Great job so far and your right if you put your mind to it you can accomplish your goals.  I have restored/customized quite a few classic cars and look at my Diablo replica and still get discouraged some days.  But after you reach each step and still push through everything seems to come together in the end.  Good Luck!

Wow amazing job on that front end !! What did you make it out of ? Cardboard or foam panels ?

The body is gonna be made entirely out of cardboard im trying to keep the cost as low as possible, I'm using cardboard rolls from Lowes, they are like $30.00, I've used an entire roll so far for the front (like 25') I'm having a hard time stiffening the cardboard, I'm thinking PVA and water brushed in layers might work, but I haven't tested it yet, any ideas? I would really appreciate it if anybody has any suggestions

There are a few guys here that would know more about this than me but I think if you cover the panels with cellophane and tape the corners with clear tape, you could cover the whole thing with Fiberglas without warping.

I have decided to use fiberglass resin to harden the cardboard and will do so saturday, I will post some pics of the result, this week I've just been cutting the rest of the pieces so I can put them together more pics coming soon

merodeador74,
The cardboard might flex out of shape if you try to lay fiberglass on it.  You could back up the cardboard by spraying insulating foam behind it and supporting the foam with something.  (More cardboard - corrugated?)  That would give the surfaces some depth of section to resist flexing.  Get creative.  I would still be gentle when you lay up the fiberglass.
Were you going to keep the cardboard under the fiberglass or take it out?
Keep us informed.

Cardboard. Seriously??

I'm assuming that at one point in time, someone said the same thing about resin and cloth for a car body.   ::toothy

The C6 Corvettes used fiberglass sandwiched balsa wood floors that have only recently been replaced with carbon fiber.  One area that I would have concern is the strength of cardboard fiber given the smaller fiber lengths and interweave.

I like the idea of using a low expansion foam behind it to keep it from flexing.

Give it a shot and let us know how it works out.

Chris

i would say use just fiberglass resin first to harden the cardboard box. After it has harden then use the resin again with fiberglass mat/sheets. :D keep up the good work.

OK so this is one layer of fiberglass resin, its sturdy but still flexible, I need to be able to move the parts around so I can attach the rest of the parts

Lol I thought the same but after measuring it fits, its tight but it fits, eventually I'm gonna have to take it out and work outside but that's OK my best friend who is working with me on the project is letting me work on his backyard which its big enough
