Title: Any tricks to expand Fuel filler hose?
Post by: notnilc20 on December 07, 2015, 10:49:43 PM
I got some 1" ID fuel filler hose and i'm having trouble fitting it over a 1 1/4 OD metal pipe. Is there a trick to do this? The hose is stiff so it's very difficult.  Is there a tool like a tapered spike or something that will open it up? Or am i just SOL and the pipe is too big? Thanks.

Can you just use a metal reducer ? Shorten the pipe or hose
But maybe there's a better idea

I thought about reducing the pipe but i'm trying to keep the inner diameter at 1". I am having issues at the fuel pump filling the car with gas because of the sharp 90 degree turns in my 3/4" ID fuel filler pipe so i am going up to 1" ID fuel safe rubber hose and lessen the sharp turns. Side note: no my car doesn't have a relief air line at the fuel line.

Ok so the pipe had threads on the end of it so i grinded the threads off and that gave me barely enough room to get the hose on there. Now i have a new yet similar problem. The pipe coming off the fuel tank is a plastic material same material the fuel tank is made of and it has a rim around the end that is supposed to keep the hose from sliding off easy even though you can clamp it on. I seriously doubt i will be able to get this stiff fuel line over that rim. Here are my options if i cant stretch the line over that rim.

1) scrap the 1" line that I paid $50 for and step up to 1 1/4" or 1 1/8".
Benefit: is fuel will flow even better.
Con:But I wasted yet more money on this build.

2) find a way to cut the plastic nozzle behind the rim that's blocking me (it's tucked away in a hard to reach spot and getting anything in there good enough to cut it will not be fun) and i will be able to slide the 1" hose over what's left fairly easy.
Benefit: save money and time (don't have to wait for parts). Probably can finish it today.
Con: i will ruin the fuel tank if it doesn't work then I will need to replace that as well. Meaning more money and time.

So I ask you fellow builders. What would you do? Play it safe and go option 1? Or take the gamble and see how far this rabbit hole goes and go with option 2?

My perspective. If this was the beginning of my build it would be easy to say option 1 and put more money into it but now that i'm towards the end of the build and just re doing a few things i'm tired of throwing more and more money at it. So i'm always looking to save time and money. However i don't know if it's worth modding the tank to save $50. But it does seem pretty straight forward.

Sorry for the long post but the boards have been slow lately so i figure what can it hurt?  Hehe.

Thanks for your replies guys/gals. Look forward to reading what would you do?

That is your problem you must have air relieve hose . No matter what size
It will be very slow to fill
Go to junk yard and get new filler tube they all have breather outlet to hook up .

But there is no air relief hose. I think it is built into the factory filler neck. If there is some relief hose somewhere i haven't touched it or seen it so it should still be working but as far as there being one running parallel with the main fuel filler line there is not one. I even went to the salvage yard to confirm this. My donor is a 2001 Pontiac Firebird Formula. Any other ideas?

Drill and tap small 1/8" ntp insert 1/8" ntp small pie and one on the tank. Run a hose from one end to other .
I think about 2" bellow the fuel filler cap.

Anybody has different idea? Let's help the guy out

Thanks Eddie. If i need to go this route do i need to drill and tap the tank next to the filler pipe at the tank? Then run the hose all the way to the filler opening somewhere? Thanks for your help.

More info needed: What fuel tank are you using? (all fuel tanks should already be equipped with an external vent).  Your fuel fill hose is too small (should be 1-1/4" - 1-1/2" diameter).  Do not use reducers to connect your hose.  I don't advise attaching the vent to the filler tube.  Vent hose should be around 1/2"-5/8".

Ok i did some more research and found that the air relief line is located on top of the tank.
The tank is the factory donors 2001 pontiac Firebird Formula.

Since with the kit i had to relocate the gas door to the location of the Murcielago gas door. Just in front of the bat wings. The factory filler line is only ID 3/4"  however it is a straight shot to the tank from the fuel door. Now there is a distance of around 40" to travel and two bends of 90 deg. to get to the tank. I thought upsizing a 1/4 would be sufficient but that is what I get for thinking too much. It may be too small like you say, but I am going to try it since I already have the parts. If i need then I will upsize to 1 1/4".

Well after messing with it a bit tonight, i have decided to order some 1 1/4" hose because i couldn't get the 1" hose over the plastic pipe coming out of the fuel tank. I even shaved down the rim on te pipe and still couldn't get the darn thing on there. I did accomplish one thing though. I think I gave myself a hernia trying to get that thing on. J/k but you know what i'm talking about. Anyway, thanks for all the advice my clone brothers. I will give another update when i get this thing nipped. Later.

Jim on my roadster I use Toyota filler neck
And is about 4" long . The rest I cut off and attached 1.3/4?id  hose out or
Alfa Romeo . Now the air went is located on filler tube and on NAREC
Alum tank , There is a 1/4 ntp female fitting connected by 3/8 gas hose . It works good full throttle pump no burping . So maybe each application how the tank ic located makes difference

Curious as to what the distance is between the filler neck and tank is on you car eddie. Thanks.

This is a muffler pipe expander, $10 at Harbor Freight. As you crank the shaft, the inner cones are pulled together which expands the fingers. It also works great to put an 1-1/2 radiator hose onto a 1-3/4 SBC water pump.

notnilc the fuel tank has about 5" 45* 2" tube. Jim Dinner custom made it so I would not had any problem installing the filler neck and connecting hose. total length is from bottom of the tube to end of the filler neck around 8-10" I don't remember now, but its short. the Toyota Corrola had a small tube hanging out as vent but I cut it off, tap and screwed vertical nipple . the reason why ?I could not push it trough the hole ,so after it was in, from inside I screwed the nipple run the 3/8 hose to tank.
BTW why Corolla ? we had one write off in our shop so I help my self.

Ok so i said i would update this situation when i got it sorted out and i am happy and relieved that it is sorted. I ended up ordering a 90 degree stainless 1.25" tube off ebay to weld to the factory firebird gas nozzle and connected the SS tube to a 1.25" rubber hose made for fuel and that ran to my gas tank nozzle. Now i can go to the gas station and fill it up full blast at the pumps.

The key was to not have such a tight radius 90 degree right behind the fas nozzle and big enough tube. My previous was only 3/4" tube now it's 1.25". I figured 3/4" was good enough because the stock pipe is 3/4" but it is a straight shot to te tank and only traveling about 15". My setup because the Murcielago gas lid is located in a different position i had to run about 35" of pipe plus a 90 degree and i didn't account for this when going with the original 3/4" size. Anyway hope this helps someone else later and maybe they can learn from my mistake. Happy building.
