Title: Replacing Porsche g50 manual trans with automatic?
Post by: Homeister on February 27, 2017, 09:08:35 AM
My 99 diablo kit has a SBC hooked to a Porsche g50 manual trans. I plan on pulling it and selling it to replace with a automatic transmission.

What is my best route with this? From what I've read a Audi 5000 transaxle seems like an easy swap. What all would in need? Just a new adapter for the trans to motor?

You do realize that an Audi 5000 is also a manual trans?

Oh. Thought I read the automatic version would also work.

So what is my best choice for a automatic transaxle?

An automatic transmission from an Audi 5000 FWD automatic technically would work but they were designed for an engine producing maximum 220 horsepower for the 1991 turbo and much lower than that for previous years. I would imagine the torque from even a stock SBC would be too much for it to hold up with any spirited launches unless it was overbuilt for the application like the 016 5 speed seems to have been.

A more modern auto option might be a ZF 5HP19FL transmission from a Porsche Boxster, Audi A4, A6,A8 or a Volkswagon Passat. See the link below for the years it came in.

The Audi A8 with 3.7 40V V8 engine was rated at 260 HP used this transmission so it might be okay behind a mild SBC.
Advanced Automotion still has a controller kit listed for this transmission on their site but states PCS has discontinued it.

Scoured the internet and I can't find any type of adapter for a automatic trans. Anyone have any help?

You may want to check out the link below. It looks like a racing transmission built using the Audi 5000 turbo 3 speed automatic you were first inquiring about. The straight cut quick change gears might be noisy for a street car however.

Kennedy Engineered Products Inc. might have an adapter for an automatic transaxle.
