New to the site. My build is an Aventador with an LS1, twin turbos, 911 Trans 6spd, custom frame. All body panels are 3D printed and carbon fiber skinned. Build website is : www.facebook.com/lasersterling (http://www.facebook.com/lasersterling).
-
Very nice. Lots of creative people using latest technology. Keep us posted.
-
Thanks! It is a fun project, and we have some schools who are watching the build for #STEM. We will be touring around to the schools to give a presentation when we are done.
-
Incredible work, I love the way you set up your suspension and your drivetrain. Heck I love everything you've done, the 3d printing and carbon fiber is ingenious :notworthy
-
Thanks. I was into 3D printing about 7 years ago, but it was just for making knik knacks. It has really come into it's own. I am still learning on the carbon fiber part, but I just finished the new rear fascia and it is tough as nails.
-
My version of a headlight bucket. Printed in ABS. Took a little liberty with the running lights.
-
Thought I would throw up a picture of the engine bay!
-
New SV style rear fascia. Should give better air flow. ::rocker

Autopro (Pedro) is a genius! Thanks for the tip on the fans!
-
Wow, very impressed with the build. Do you plan on making molds of the body pieces? This seems like the most accurate replica Aventador body. Still can't believe you 3D printed it all. Insane! Keep it up!!
-
Thanks! I do not plan on making molds. I am not sure about accuracy, since I have taken a lot of liberties with solid models others have posted on grabcad. They are also made for printing, not molding. The body model is not totally perfect, but it is available.
-
It looks very good and accurate. Your chassis is very impressive too. Twin turbos I won't even comment on, all I can say is I am drooling lol. If I ever need something 3d printed I know who to contact :)
-
Updates!

The rear shot of the radiators and the turbos looks ridiculous :drool such a beautiful thing 888o

Working gaps.

Partial rear splitter and exhaust tips!

Plumbing the rads. We will see what the extra load might be with the extra coolant in the tubes. I tried to minimize the issue.

Very nice tubing, what did you use?

1.5" polished aluminum, .098 wall.

More bits on the car.

For your viewing pleasure. ::sun

Out in the sun...

Congratulations footcutter very good effort ::beers

Your car is coming along very nicely. I just wanted to say that there needs to be more people like you, you helped me with a 3d model and you are helping others on this forum. Your a honest stand up guy. Thanks for your help and I’m watching your build.

Thanks Wayne. I hope the model was helpful. How goes the hunt for the Mono?
-
I’m working with a guy on a replica monocoque and have sent him a bunch of pictures that he is going to incorporate into his current monocoque. He has the top of the monocoque that was scanned from a real Aventador so the windows will fit. I also sent him some pictures with measurements for the door so he can modify his monocoque to fit the other doors. I can’t say his name because he doesn’t want his name or pictures distributed. After he makes the changes to his 3d model he is going to cnc one to full size for me, we’re both looking to do the same thing so we’re helping each other out to get a monocoque that will fit all of the OE windows and front and rear frame.

Starting tin work in the engine compartment in prep for skinning panels. Need some structure the bolt them too. Drywall screws, while handy, is not the final look I am going for. ::tongue

Footcutter...
Have you been able to "side-by-side" yours with a real Aventador to see if everything looks right?
Amazing job you are doing!

Thank you! No, I will not be badging mine. There are a lot of modifications I have made, which are subtle, but distinguish it from a clone. I guess you would call it a look alike. This is because I can make changes on the fly with 3D printing. I want to capture the spirit of the Aventador, but still make it mine.
-
Footcutter...
Good for you!
After building mine for a while, I began to wonder why I was "hooked" into making it exactly like a real Lamborghini. It cost more money and time than if I just built a car instead of an exact replica. Then, of course, after it was done people would look at it and say, "Oh, he bought a Lamborghini." instead of recognizing all the work and time I spent making it! AND, if it was in a show, after they saw it, it would take a short while for them to learn it wasn't a real Lambo so all the deception was short-lived.
For me it was easier to use an already made replica body than trying to produce a body AND drivetrain. (Taking into mind NOTHING was easy.)
You have chosen to do both and are doing a fantastic job. My hats off to you.

Appreciated! I am having tons of fun.

Rear deck wearing 3 layers of carbon fiber.
-
Do you design all these parts yourself on the computer or are you starting with a model of them? Anyway you do it it looks fantastic, I can see all your hard work going into this project.
-
I do all the design myself. I am building a "look alike" not a clone, so I have changed a few things to my taste. Thanks for the nice note!
-
Custom silk screen for the Aventador. Ridiculous, right? ::tongue
-
Rough finished rear deck. I have some variances in the weave, but I think it adds character. Shows it was hand made!
-
Getting ready for the bag!
-
Marker lights, and buckets!
-
Going with an Audi wheel, column, and comfort ECU. I will update on mods, and how well it goes together.
-
SV rear fascia out of the bag. Got a few bubbles to fix, which luckily I now know how to fix. The 3 layers of CF sucked up 5 kg of resin! One of two very complicated parts (front and read fascia).
-
Man you are doing these super complicated parts and they come out great. I tried to do one the other day that is super simple and it came out horrible. Even with the vacuum bag I still got places where the CF didn't lay down correctly in the edges.
-
Your parts are looking good. I wish mine was going as fast as your project is going. Great job.

Are you using 3M 77 spray adhesive? Got any pictures of your bagging procedure? I have had a lot of failures, so I might be able to help.

Time to start building coats.
-
Fixed the crushed in sides, and I am starting to get the mounts for the finished parts.

Interior door structure.

Is that a CR-10 that I see in the background? You sure are giving that thing a workout. What type of filament are you using? PETG? Are you just gluing the peices together with epoxy? If I knew how to do carbon fiber I would follow your example and make a body too.
-

Sure is. It has been running nearly 24/7 since Feb. I use PLA for the dimensional stability and cost (I am on my 200th kg). After the carbon fiber is applied, the PLA no longer matters. We have left a piece out in the hot Colorado sun for most of the summer to check for distortion, and got a positive result. I use MMA epoxy which is not cheap ($25/50ml) but holds like a mother. I am still learning on the carbon fiber, and now that I have done the most complex part, I am happy with the results. Any issues that arise in the bagging process I have learned how to fix (bubbles, warps, etc..).
-
Wow that is a lot of filament, hopefully you bought in bulk and got a deal. What infill are you running, I imagine you don't need much with the carbon fiber? Great idea building the body that way, I'm going to have to look into working with carbon fiber. I might attempt the same at some point.

10-20% infill, so the part does not get crushed when in the vacuum bag. Sometimes if the interior volume is big enough, and the air can leak out, the part gets crushed. I am on my third rear fascia, I have two others collecting dust, both LP style. One has a warp I cannot fix, the other is pretty good will a few bubbles that can be fixed. That one is for sale, but requires freight.

I saw some reviews on youtube of the CR-10 and it seems like a really good 3D printer. I have been wanting to get one for quite some time but don't know much about them. Is this something that you would recommend or some other model?

Pedro, I have 2 CR-10s. For the money, they are the best on the market. They are somewhat fiddly, but once you get used to it, they just pump out the parts. Make sure you get the filament runout sensor model, makes a big difference in failed prints. There is also a large community of CR-10 users, and videos on tips and tricks. Thingiverse.com has a large CR-10 upgrades you can print out.
-
I also have a CR-10 and love it, I've made a bunch of custom parts for myself and friends. It takes some practice to get the slicer settings right and can be frustrating at times but worth it. Also, you'll need to learn how to use Fusion 360 or an alternative if you want to make your own parts. There are a lot of youtube videos about it so with time you can get good at it. Anyway, get the CR-10S, it has a lot of upgrades that you'll want, I started with a base CR-10 and have upgraded it to an S model.

Awesome guys thanks for the info, anywhere in particular that I should buy it from?

My friend has 5 - 3d printers, he uses them for parts, for a product he sells.
He runs his 24 -7 ! But he is going to invest in some injection molds.

It looks like gearbest has a better price atm but I've heard it can take a month to ship from them.

Otherwise shop around but make sure it's a creality and not a knock off.

nickmkk is correct. The slicer is very important. I use simplify 3D, about $150, and it has been invaluable. Lots of automated settings, yet very powerful. I use solidworks, but that is because I have a work license.
-
I just use Cura, it's free and actually pretty good now days. I would start with it and buy simplify 3d if you don't like it. I haven't used Simplify 3d though, it may be worth buying it I just made Cura work so I never took the plunge.

Mounting and gaping skinned panels. On to the passenger side. Don't worry about the imperfections, all panels will get filler, and a final CF layer.

I like the fake Aventador but the problem is you can never ever make it look like the real thing. That is why I would prefer to buy an exotic style original car that people do not recognize. How can you look at someone with a straight face when you have fake butt interior and say : " how do you like my Lambo Aventador?" It ain't happening. Go with a builder that has their own brand. It looks like there are a few out there like:
Chupakabra

Reading your other posts, it would appear that you have not built one of these yourself. There are exceptional builders on this forum who have replicated OEM cars look down to the smallest detail. Yes there are other cars coming on the market which will offer different looks. In my opinion, this forum is to support builders who love and enjoy building cars, not for discouraging their efforts.
-
I am in no way discouraging anyone. I have numerous posts with complements to everyone. This is called a forum where we are all free to comment. If you cant handle my opinions and comments, then maybe this is not the site for you. For your edification, you are correct, I am not a builder but a buyer with a distinct eye for detail. I would find it highly unlikely that any builder could replicate all of the details of a car that originally costs over $500,000. It can not be done. Have you seen the guages, seats, etc. inside an Aventador?

I think you miss the point. Also my project is a look-a-like, as it will not carry the Lambo badge. If you do not care for my project, then don't watch it. :P
Did you read the sites tag line "LamboClone - The Premier Site for Lamborghini Replica Builders?"

I am very interested in your build. I own diablo 6.0 that I bought from IFG. The only problem is each time I drive it, people laugh a me when they see my Fiero interior. I think your build looks great. I wish I had your talent. I was in no way trying to disrespect you as I cant even build myself. I was giving my opinion. This is a free site, you can not tell me what to say or think. can you? Are you unwilling to take critique?

Fair enough. We like "constructive" criticism as builders. You seem to come in with your comments basically giving the impression of "what you guys are doing is ridiculous." So comment away, and enjoy the build, but keep the "spirit" of being constructive.

Not everyone is trying to build an exact replica. I consider my car a muscle car that resembles a lambo because I like the lambo body. I would rather it be obvious that I built my car than have people think I just bought one. That said, the fiero interior is hideous and should be replaced, I would probably laugh at you too.

Sheet metal work. It is a little piece meal, but I will weld it all together when I am done to make it look professional.

Morning fun! Door structure.

Morning fun! Door structure.
Very impressive! Keep up the great work.
-
What did you use for a hinge?
-
One of those lambo door conversion units, about $99. I have heavily modified it. Currently it is inside the door, so as I add door structure, I can have it bolt to the front of the door.
-
I will also need to put in some hinge guides to make sure the door opens at the right angle to clear the front of the window. It is better than blowing $1k on an original set. :o
-
Sounds like a lot of work to use the off the shelf hinges nut I agree, $1000 for a set of OEM is crazy!
-
It is, but I am in this for the fun of solving problems, so all good! W:)
-
This weekends fun! Sill, and B pillar structure. Sail panel understructure done, and dash hood printed.
-
Bonded the sail panels to the quarters, and now have the quarter panel mounts solid. I can actually lean on it now! ::rocker
-
Fixed the bubbles in the rear bumper (White x's) to get ready for the final CF layer, which will be hand laid. Also noticed that the passenger side hub was off by ~1" from the center line. After considering harikari, I noticed my A arm tabs were not quite square with the frame. ::tongue A little adjustment and I should be squared up again. Just goes to show you need to constantly measure, and not be afraid to fix these issues! ::headbang

Engine cover structure, and rear window structure.

Finished tacking the engine cover structure.

$800 for the pair. Not too bad in my opinion. I was a little shocked when I went to a new parts dealer, and found this out. The little quarter windows were $850 a piece! Weird...

Not bad at all. I’m not a rich guy so, 1k is a lot of money. But when it comes to these cars 1k can prove a fair price in many Instances. Just my two cents. #cheers

I bought OEM door glass as well. The curvature looks extreme but seems to perfectly match Grand Prix door glass... this allows you to use their window tracks which is nice.
-
Got the panels finally centered on the wheels. Re-adjusted the entire rear end to get everything straight and to fit right. Now I can start moving forward to the rockers.
-
Put in bolted engine cross brace, rear roof area, and started on the passenger door area.
-
engine/ is it BMW ?

LS1. 5.7L. Porsche transaxle.

oh the alt sway me off ,looks like Bosh in my Beemer .

Nice job on the build. I’m curious on how you are going to title your car when it’s done? Keep up the good work.
-
Thanks. Here is Colorado, we get a VIN inspection where you need to show receipts for all major components. Then you are issued a state VIN, and title. Just that easy.
-
Started on the firewall.

More firewall progress. Amazing the emotional effect a couple pieces of sheet metal can have. ::rocker

Finished up the engine cover glue up. Covered the sail panel fronts, added engine cover structure, and final fitting of rear roof area.

One piece at a time. Gaps still need attention, but that will be the final fitting after all parts are skinned and mounted.

Wow man, those shots of the car in your driveway look awesome. You really have made a lot of progress lately, keep it up and you will certainly finish this next year. What are your plans for bodywork and paint? I know you are still a while out but you probably have something in mind.
-
Thanks! Going to leave it carbon fiber.
-
Any comments on the positioning of the fuel system and battery? I had this setup in the trunk of my Mustang, with no issues. Thoughts?
FYI, I will be surrounding the tank with 2x4" steel tubing.
Thanks

Ok, after a lot of searching I have settled on a minivan windshield...2008 Toyota Sienna. Sides need cutting, and some fab work at the top of the hood, but it does not look half bad, and the arc at the top is almost perfect.
-
Slid it down 1". Now it is perfect for where the wipers go!
-
Starting to mock up front end.
-
Cut the glass, first attempt. Got some small cracks, but it will do for now.
-
That is a very good fit. I cut mine at the local place that has a water jet cutting machine. No cracks :)
-
That is a great idea! What base glass did you use?
Thanks!
-
Did you ever look at a 2000 Infiniti i30 windshield? My kit was modified to use it specifically. It's close to OEM but about 6" shorter at the bottom.... similar to what you appear to be using. I'm not sure if it would be easier to tweak your window frame to take it instead of cutting glass. Just a thought.
-
From the model I have it is only 1" shorter than what I have as OEM, 41" top to bottom. Curvature is darn perfect. It also has the cut away on the drivers side for the wipers.
-
My mistake. I think I'd looked at your first windshield pic before you slid it down. It looked like there was a much larger gap.
My windshield stops around where the bottom black frit paint starts on your windshield (as on the later pic).
-

What work does the top of the hood need to make this windshield work? I wonder how well, or not, this windshield will work with my kit....
By the way, you are making great progress while mine is collecting dust
-
I had not glued the hood together, and so it was sagging in the middle, and making the gap look much worse. Once i fixed that and moved it down there basically is only enough gap for the wipers. I will throw the hood back on and take some pics for you.
-
Pics.
-
thanks for the photos, that windshield comes close to fitting at the bottom too... thanks for the windshield tip.
-
Live and learn. Changed where the gas cylinders for the doors go based on others builds. Now the doors open and close easy peasy!
-
Restructured the gas cylinder area for more tire clearance. Mounted wipers, and mounted clutch cylinder.
-
It looks so good with the glass in place, it really transforms the car.
-
Restructured the passenger side door, and started structuring the center console.
-
Heat/AC box in place.

Thanks. Try to get a few hours every weekend. I do a lot of prep during the week.
I like the look better. At high speed, I will not need to worry about it coming through the windshield! ::tongue

Not real exciting progress. Fabed tabs for fuel cell, mounting for battery, and started the long process of getting the rear bumper ready for the final CF layer. Also added structure for passenger headlight, and more sheet metal under the passenger dash.
-
Your fab work is outstanding.
-
Thanks, but it is pretty simple stuff! The 3D printer gets a lot of credit! :LL:

Hey! im trying to build a replica/clone set of aventador tail lights and front lights for cheap can you help ? thanks from the uk !
-
Rear tail lights almost finished, headlight buckets covered in CF/Kevlar, and printed start button housing.

this looks great job how much is it ?
-
I do not think they would be economical other than doing it yourself. Free files: https://grabcad.com/library/aventador-sv-1

With reflectors.
-
Are you also printing the red pieces? they really look like real lenses, great job!

Yes. They are printed in PETG, transparent red. Thanks!
-
Printing the new rear splitter, moving along. Got the headlight buckets nearly done.
-
Marker lights finally!
-
The rear splitter looks very intricate, lots of work.

Wide body quarter in da bag!
-
New air diffuser.
-
Rear air diffuser fit, quarter panels out of the bag, and new air lift system for the coil overs.
-
These transition pieces are going to be key without molds. I can get the panels very close, but when wanting nice tight shot lines, it will give me some flexibility. Beside, metal work is fun. What say you?
-
So rather than trash all my work by running a low clearance, I am going with a lift system. This will give me an extra 2" of ride height on demand.
-
It looks like you have the same coil overs as I do. Really need a system like this or I will have the same problems as you. Where did you get the parts and do you have any more info on them? Great work on the car ::thumbup
-
Cups are from Stanceparts.com. The air system is a Ride tech system, but you can use a static system from stanceparts. I wanted the functionality of the ride tech.
-
Parts are piling up!
-
Rear deck fitment. Big sigh of relief.
-
Ohhh that spoiler looks awesome :drool Great job on the infusion.
-

Thanks! It is what I call rear deck. I have a rear wing that goes through the deck and attaches to the frame.
-
Panels starting to fit nicely.
-
The panel fit is really nice! Great job! Definite advantage of 3d printing the parts. (If the cards line up I'll finally start mounting my panels next week).
Are you planning on using OEM vent grills or will you print those too? If you plan on using OEM, how close are your measurements?

Neils, Thanks! I cannot use OEM vents, since I am running a widebody (4" wider than stock). I found this on eBay and it is a little denser, but I like it.

That's a good looking mesh. I might get some of that. I'm mostly using OEM grills, but there are a couple that I couldn't get. I have a nice powder coated aluminum mesh, but this one looks closer to the OEM grill mesh.
-
Agreed that is nice looking material. I also need some for the grills by the quarter windows and a side air scoop, good find ::thumbup
-
Pulled the trigger on a used couple of these OEM regulators ($200 ea). Was going to be hard pressed to match the extreme curve of the OEM window glass with another solution. Let me know if anybody needs dimensions.
-
If you need tracks, check out an early 2000's Grand Prix. The glass has the same curvature. I have OEM door glass... fits in the Grand Prix tracks perfectly. I was surprised... as you say, they have a lot of curvature.
-
Too late for me. ::scratch However, do you have pictures?
Thanks.
-
Neils, These look really different from OEM. You did it for an Aventador? Which one did you use?
-
The tracks that I'm referring to are the guides that the glass sits in, as opposed to the regulator tracks. The rear guide is completely in the door, whereas the front guide largely sits above the door.
I posted some pics of the components I am using on page 12 of my build thread (about halfway down). There are also some pics showing how i modified the Grand Prix regulator tracks...

Since my regulators were used, I think I got a good price. Here they are in action. The video shows the window before moving it forward 3" to the stock position. Oh, and before roasting me on my janky hinge mount, it will be replaced with a single 1/4" thk steel bracket. :P

Aligning carbon fiber panels sucks. No room for error!
-
You're doing a great job of getting them aligned! ::thumbup
What are you doing to add the center brake light in the spoiler? Do you plan on having an active spoiler?
-
Neils, Thank you sir! Fixed wing. Not sure I need a "third eye" in Colorado (according to equipment needed for homebuilt cars). That being said, for safety I will probably add it to the rear deck, where I did leave room for one.
-
Here.
-
Out in the open with new panels.
-
Engine cover finished. 60"x74"!!!
-
Fantastic job. Really coming together

Very impressive, those panels just keep looking nicer and nicer!
-
Thanks!
-
Rear roof section in the bag.
-
Well rear roof section failed. Caved in all over the place. Turns out it was a good thing because I went to aluminum for the rear roof section, and now I am able to gap the engine cover really well. Plus it was quick to do. Also, first door skin finished, and turned out beautiful.
-
Starting on door structure. Mounted the CF panel to a steel tubing frame and applying the sheet metal.
-
Driver fender done. Gaps are coming out ok. Also, got the passenger door skinned. 4 panels to go!
-
Got her out of the barn.
-
Dude that butt end is seriously making me consider changing mine! Stop showing me that picture lol

Hood skinned. New mounts for hood, and got my new push rod fulcrum welded and in.

Very Cool...... congratulations

I was impressed that your build made it into the news... but you forget to tell us that Lamborghini swapped it for two weeks with a real one so they could film a commercial! That must have been a great two weeks for you and the family!
