Title: NAERC w/ Mercedes M120 V12 / OEM Diablo Transmission
Post by: RStaggs on December 17, 2016, 06:11:10 PM
Just wanted to post a little update. Haven't been able to do much work on my project, but have picked up a few parts. I have a Mercedes M120 V12 (16k miles), that I plan on bolting up with a OEM Lamborghini diablo (15k miles). The plan is to use a BMW M5 rear differential. Going to be a headache to get this all to work. Also picked up a OEM shift gate!!!

Here's a few pics.

Are you using a custom harness or trying to get the Benz harness to work? Also why the naturally aspirated v12 and not the twin turbo? v12?

@casper. I will be using a megasquirt 3 pro w/ a custom wiring harness. I went w/ the M120 because it a DOHC, and the Mercedes twin turbo is a SOHC. The M120 is the same engine block Pagina put in his Zondas (just tuned by AMG). If its good enough for a Pagina Zonda... its good enough for me. I do plan on a twin turbo setup, but cooling becomes a big issue???

Hi RS...

Is the shifter gate and shifter assembly from a Mercedes? If so what year and model?

Thanks
CCIE

@CCIE

No, shift gate and assembly came out of a 98 Diablo. I got it with the Diablo transmission.

The plan was to use the Mercedes M120 w/ a mendeola transaxle. But the engine and transaxle setup was to LONG. Only had two options to make the M120 fit. 1) V-drive set up, or 2) A modified Short Bell G50 transaxle (13k+). I was able to get a perfectly working 98 OEM Diablo transmission and shift assembly on ebay, super cheap. Its going to be a headache to figure out how to bolt the M120 to a Diablo Trans. I don't know off anyone who has put a M120 in there project. I think I'm pioneering it. I do have the option for All Wheel drive!

Wow this is going to be the best replica drivetrain ever if you can get it all to work together !!

That is a nice looking Diablo project you have there , all to rare now .
The engine / gearbox combo idea is intriguing and I had considered a lambo gearbox myself once ,  but the problem of the gearbox anti-clockwise rotation sealed it's fate for me , so look forward to seeing how you tackle the fitment. :)

Hey String not a problem if you want 5 reverse gears lol, i didnot know they spun backwards.Im guessing thats why Rstaggs got it cheap, he may have to invert it now that could get interesting.

Sorry but you are not the first with m120 in your build.
I got one fitted in my build.
Here you have a build thread in Swedish, but i think there would be ok with google translation. Lot of pics.

I have 01e transmission and made my own adapter plate for engine and transmission.
I will be running my engine with a Link thunder ecu and dual e-throttle on itbĀ“s.
Even made som tuned headers for this. Planning to port heads and re grind camshafts. But first, making her run.
