Title: D&R Coupe - just now building it
Post by: sisqocracker on March 21, 2016, 09:05:47 PM
I won't replicate my thread from KC here, but wanted to let those know who hadn't seen my build yet... that if they want to follow, I have the build diary going on @

http://100mpgmotors.blogspot.com (http://100mpgmotors.blogspot.com)

Made huge progress today finishing off the exhaust and installing the axles.  Got the car on the ground and pushed it back in forth in gear to make sure it didn't roll; and pressed the clutch in and it did roll, so I know my clutch is good too.  SO happy to only be 3 away from a drivable chassis!  Fuel, coolant and brakes.  And I'll be rolling up and down my street after that!!!  :-)

Brake hardware is in now.  Needs fluid and bled.  May do that today.

Then all we need is fuel and cooling and I'll be able to drive it up and down the road in front of the house.  On fumes!  :-)

I'm searching for either an O2 plug that I can drill and tap for EGT or a bushing to replace my O2 with my EGT on a 95TA LT-1 motor.  Anyone know what part number I need?

More updates y'all.  3 of them actually.  Got busy for a bit and didn't put any updates here for a while.

Battery mounting spot is pretty much done.

It was up on 4 jack stands.  It wasn't going anywhere.  And had it been on the floor I would have stopped trying to crank it right away when it would have tried running over my foot.  :-)  But yeah, I have been told numerous times throughout my life that I am extremely lucky... all the time.  Being in the right place at the right time too, has been a common theme it seems.

Here are the new updates for today:

Those came with the D&R kits.  I got a VERY complete kit from a guy years ago.  He said he had bought like everything you could possibly get from D&R when he got his.

That sounds like a very nice kit.  I can tell you from experience that trying to find and source all the pieces required to build these cars has been the hardest part.  I don't have shrouds like that for mine so they are on my list of even more parts I have to fabricate.

Why aren't you putting plastic wheelwell liners?

01
Title: Re: D&R Coupe - just now building it
Post by: sisqocracker on August 16, 2016, 10:31:07 AM
I probably will.  I have some liners from my old 95TA that I had.  I kept them from the front of that car, the rear didn't have any.  But these pieces actually duct the air into the radiators at speed.  Plus they already came with my kit, so why not use them?  They have a couple of different features, aside from being much stronger than plastic liners, they do serve as a good way to channel air away from the rear coming off of the rear tire (less turbulence).  They mate up to the back of the car (at the air exits) and the big vent holes in the quarter panels so they add structure to the car (much beefier than without).  They are shaped so that it gives you an easy way to get to the tail lights from the trunk area, which means the hot air leaving the radiator isn't blasting the tail lights as it is ducted out the hole at the rear.  That's what the funny looking swoop at the end and on top is there for.  It is your way to block off the exit from the radiator and mate up to the top of the exit on the back of the car with one another and not burn your tail lights.  I'll have more pictures as this goes in and you can see the whole tail light thing I'm talking about.  So I'd say the 3 reasons why I'm using them (well 4 if you say 'cause I already have them) but the 3 would be; controlling air flow through the radiator front to back in and out of the car, inner wheel well fender for controlling air coming off of the rear of the tire, saving the heat from the tail lights and making it easy to swap those bulbs through the trunk.

Thanks,
Coop

Coop

Title: Re: D&R Coupe - just now building it
Post by: AdrianBurton on August 16, 2016, 02:01:32 PM
question...
without the air box sealed you will never get all of the air to go through the radiators, how are you going to manage that?
Title: Re: D&R Coupe - just now building it
Post by: sisqocracker on August 16, 2016, 07:05:57 PM
Maybe I don't understand what you mean by sealed.  Other people who have had these and a V8 in their car complain about not getting enough airflow through their radiators.  If they left them closed up where the only intake inlet to the radiator was from the inlet on the top of the quarter panel, they only get enough at about 60 or 70 mph.  They'd overheat sitting in traffic.  The answer those guys found out was to open up a large "access" hole in the part right in front of the radiators and then they were fine.  Now that was with using these same radiators.  Apparently the V12 in the real car has more cores than these radiators do and can dissipate more heat, because although I have about the same size displacement wise, I'm not making as much power.  Sounds like the V6 guys 3800's and such don't have this problem.

So I've just followed what has already bit them and chose to do that step now rather than putting them in and mine getting hot (me already knowing this will be a problem) and then remove the radiators from the ducts which would then be glassed in and cutting them and trying to rework it with it in the car.  So I'm just choosing to trust that the 2 or 3 other places where I had read this before are probably what I'll have happen to me and deal with it now rather than later.

Word is, it just doesn't flow enough air without speed and the vacuum behind the car helping you out.  I guess for the short answer.  :-)

Thanks,
Coop

Title: Re: D&R Coupe - just now building it
Post by: AdrianBurton on August 17, 2016, 09:11:23 AM
I hadn't heard of any problems like that, the biggest thing that I had heard was due to the radiators not being sealed to the ducts and the lower quality fans being used
Title: Re: D&R Coupe - just now building it
Post by: sisqocracker on August 17, 2016, 09:23:01 AM
Yeah those came with crap fans, won't be using them.  I've got the ones from my 95TA going in.  Also I live in the south and I could see these things getting hot with no more air than you could get through the one inlet per side.  But yeah, it's done now.  Will be posting how it goes of course.

But I did read that in some old posts a few years back.  About the opening them up to get more air.  I probably read about 10 years worth of posts before I ever started building the car.  I had sat on it for about 13 years before I started building it.  Long time coming.  Just glad I can do it now.  Hate seeing folks not able to finish theirs, that sucks, it'll be with them from now on probably.  If they're the kind who really like making things.

Thanks,
Coop

Looking good, all progress is good progress... even if it's just fixing stuff now so you're not stranded down the road later on.  Keep smiling and having fun, it's a joy to watch your build develop as the day of your first drive nears closer.

Hey Coop...
I love innovation and you are really into something with your build.  Besides that, you are making an exceptional replica.  You are going to cause a scene wherever you go.  (Fun isn't it?  LOL)
Best you found the tank leak now.  At least that can be made right before you get stranded on the road.
It is all in the "game"  we play.
Keep up the good work.

You have balls putting all that heavy stuff on top of your windshield to hold it down  8)

Any special reason why you need to make the windshield removable?  Getting the windshield in is one of those milestones in everyone's build congratulations.

They have a single windshield they sell for all kits, regardless what you have. It's an oversized 93-02 f-body based windshield.  Already has plenty of curvature to it and can be cut with a plexiglass jigsaw blade to any size you want. Was very smooth to cut actually. Can get them in 3/16ths or 1/4 inch thick versions. Tinted or clear. I got the 1/4 inch thick which was suggested for high speed driving, about 120+ mph.  Was about $400 usd. Although mine is tinted, I think I paid the price for clear. So I got the tinted for free or a discount?  Because they were liking my story about high mpg and wanted to help me out with what I wanted vs what I could pay for. Great guys sounds like.

Thanks,

Event was a huge success.  There will be more to follow, but here's a video in the interim.  I'll post more once I get home.

Video shot from inside the car.  That left rear brake still drags when I first release it, but does quieten down once going for a bit.

Sorry it's been so long without an update.  I'm getting a few little things done once in a while, just not posting about it.  I'm about to start an adventure into Smokey Yunick's territory with his hot vapor engine idea. I'm deciding what turbo will go on my motor for this feat. Will post more updates once I've got that installed and the car starts.  I may have an interim post where I change how I meter the fuel prior to the turbo being added. I don't want too many changes at once without test runs in between.

Got to drive the car again today!  That was fun!  :-D Always gets my attention when there are small explosions.  ha ha!

It's all good.  I drove it right after I shot this video too.  Just didn't make a video of that drive.  Was too busy monitoring everything and just making sure the tires don't flat spot.  :-)  I'll drive it more now that I have electric heat in it for the fumes.  I need to cycle the heater so it doesn't get too hot and it'll be good to go after that.

Got to drive the car 2 days in a row!  Another first!  And I also got to crank the car in colder weather than ambient temps would allow.  It said 48 outside in the Sun, but the wind chill was much colder than that.  Anyhow, still another first.  I also got to run the fumes so rich that I killed the engine.  So you know you can make all the power you can stand if you're capable of enriching the fuel to the point of flooding the motor.  :-D

Sorry the video isn't so hot, most of the time the phone lived under my drivers seat, but you can still hear everything including the commentary at the end.  Exciting times y'all.  Making history...all over again!  ;-)

I've got a new update on marker light install.  I see I've missed an update here too.  I do have my controller working properly on the heater.  I'll have to post that one up.  That was a couple of days ago.  I really need my seat back in this car so I can test drive it with the heater control operating now.  One step closer to getting a tag for the car!  :-D

Hey Coop.  Coming along fine.  My $.02 on the inner door construction:  Use the Mercedes latches for an OEM look.  Reinforce the latch inside of the door inner and weld it to the inner door frame.  This will make the latch strong enough to handle the force of shutting the door better than the fiberglass.

I can appreciate that.  I really do.  But... ;-)
Something that I've been saying from the beginning of the build is that I'm using what I've got, what came with the D&R kit, and that my car is functional first and pretty second.  There are all sorts of upgrades I suspect I will swap out over time in an effort to make it more OEM like, but I was never going to go through the extra expense up front to do it once.  This car really is going to be a mule for the various methods of fumes as its primary purpose in life.  I'll make it more OEM like where I can as I go along that isn't having me bin existing components that I already have.  I suspect this car will always be my project car forever.  I'm sure I'll get things and have weekend projects where I'll upgrade something or swap something out, but I want it on the road soonest that I can.  So I'm using my vast pile of parts that will go into the initial build and see where the dust settles after that.  I just lucked out getting into the Murci wheels and suspension/brake setup from Tom.  So I did that.  But I know I can get into lil part hell with every little thing if I want to.  I'm already feeling like I'm a year behind.

Excuse the rant.  Just wanted folks to know that I truly do appreciate the advice.  I'd like to be able to help others out where I could as well.  I'm working on the plan and then coming back for lots of little stuff over the coming years.  I think in either case it'll take the same amount of time, I'll just be driving it already and still making upgrades where I can.

Thanks,
Coop

Coop...
You have the right attitude.
Build it the way you want.  Use what you have and make it functional.
Just remember you are on a Lamborghini site and most of us are really "into it".
Lambo is king!  At least that is the way I started my project.  After spending crazy money, I began to wonder why.  After all I am building a custom street rod that LOOKS like a Lamborghini.  Not a Lamborghini.
You are building a "test bed" car that will demonstrate the fumes engine.  Go for it!
We will still be with you because of the enthusiasm you exhibit.  We are all car-guys.  You are welcome here.
Comments made are just trying to help with no criticism.

I agree with you about using the parts you have on hand...these are costly projects otherwise.  However, 01Lambiero's comment about connecting the latch to your door frame is very valid and may save you serious aggravation later.  The fiberglass could give way during normal door usage...at best causing closing problems...at worst, serious safety issues.  It may seem like a lot of extra work, but realistically, connecting the latch to the door frame now is relatively simple and quick.

I think you guys know I'm not bashful, I will ask for help on things that I need direction on.  I've been reading for about 10 years before i started the build so I have a lot of things that I've already decided that I'm going to do.  Thanks RT for the nod on having the right attitude.  I understand how folks feel about what they do.  Not trying to step on any toes anywhere.  I know that this car will never be to the Nth degree of a real one.  If I were to go that route I would have had a tube chassis from day one.  But I always knew I wasn't going to do that.  My thought on that was to save my money and get a real one, one day if I wanted to go that degree.  But that's me.  I may still get one.  I was thinking the other day that I'm paying over $2k/month on both my 1st and 2nd mortgages at the same time (total for the two together).... I was thinking that could be a car note.  hhhmmm  :-)  hee hee

Here's my latest update.  May get more done tomorrow.  Depends on if the rain holds out or not.

I've finally got my front suspension all torqued down.  Yes.  The videos you've seen  of me driving it around before now had some bolts with nuts and some were just bolts.  :-)  Like the top of the shock was just pinned (and yes there is a ton of friction there) and I wasn't doing any highway driving so I wasn't worried about it.  The few passes I have videos of are about all of the ones I've ever done.  I think I only have one drive without it being video'd.

But I'm so glad that this is finally done.  Was a real bear trying to find all the right metric hardware to put my stuff together with.  3 out of 4 (as it turns out) of my bottom A-arm bolts are M12x1.75x90mm long. One of them was a 1/2-13x4!  Whatever.  It's all smooth and as it should be now.  I have some extra 1/2-13x4 bolts and nylon lock nuts lying about now.  I guess I'll take them back to the store and get my money back.  Don't think I'll be needing them in the rest of the build.

But the big deal (drum roll please) is that I can now get an alignment.  YAY!  :-)  I've been looking forward to that day for some time now.  My crap toe job and non-center steering wheel days are about to be over (until it needs another alignment).  hee hee

I've got a guy I've used for my regular cars, he does a bang up job and has a nice laser setup.  I'll be talking to them first about the settings.  I have the Diablo manual that has been floating around out here forever and will see what he thinks about mostly following that.  I don't know that every number will be the same or not.  As these things (even though mine is coil over) are not the same as factory.  Plus it has to look right in the wheel arch.  :-)  I noticed when screwing around with my caster and camber that it can move the wheel to the point that it interferes with the body.

Anyhow, thought I would share.  I'm also posting this to my build dairy, so no link, as it is the same info.

Thanks,
Coop

I was saying over on kitcentral that I was dropping the car off at a buddy's shop and probably not working on it while it was over there...

Ok, so after dropping it off, I'm still running out and doing stuff to the car.  I replaced the fans as mine were growling badly (bearings were going in them).  The growl was louder than the air moving through them, that's how bad it was.  But now they just sound like air moving so fast that I could knock it neutral and ride on it.  :-)

I will download all my pics and videos for updates and get them posted up on the build diary and a link to them here.

Oh yeah I got a cool new FI computer setup that I will talk about too.  Very easy to get it going.  Now we'll see if it is easy to get it going on the car itself.  But loading the code and testing the board itself was a snap.  just followed the page and it worked as it should.  Speeduino is what it is called.  All open sourced hardware/software.  I'm all about that.  :-)

Thanks,
Coop

Sorry it's been soooo long since my last post.  I hadn't fallen off of the face of the earth or anything.  You guys aren't getting that lucky already.  :-)

No, I've been tackling plenty of other things as of late.

I did however get some help from the forums on speeduino.com for getting my car to spark on the new Speeduino setup.  Pretty sweet.  Now that, that is done, I'm ready to get the fuel right for the fumes box.  Once I have that, I'll have a full list of things that people could get and copy what I've done.  You know, for whoever would like to have a 100+ MPG V8 around to drive.  :-D

Some links here to some of the troubleshooting I've been doing.

Oh HAPPY DAY!!!   ::bounce  I got my Diablo over to my buddy's shop to do more body and such tot he car as I'm getting pretty busy with my work and a move to TX and I don't want to loose momentum on getting the car done.  So I have pics of the struts in the doors and a short video of my daughter letting the door open.  SO excited about this getting done I've had enough left over for 2 days now, going into the 3rd!  :-)  I've waited on this day to see the doors open on their own for 16 years now!!!

Here's the pics and video.

Sorry I've been away for so long, but needless to say, my shop and I have had a come to Jesus meeting.  Yes.  It is still there.  No, it isn't painted yet.  Yes, there is a guy working on it every week now.

And, I haven't looked in the threads yet for chatter, but are we thinking about Carlisle this year or no?

I'm thinking about it, because I think I will have 2 cars to show.  The Diablo but in color this time (Monterrey Blue) and minimal interior.  And my 78 Trans Am which I plan to have running on fumes also at that point, but carb instead of FI like the Diablo has been done.

What say you?

Oh yeah, and, I'm glad to be back.  I'll be posting up pics of the progress again shortly.  Already have some, but have to run for now.  Will post by the weekend if not later today.  I got to get back to Texas.  Yeah, a lot has changed, I live near Austin now.  I did get to go see LamboBuilder since I've moved there, took my Lotus Exige to go visit.  Oh yeah, I have an Exige now.  Lots to catch you guys up on.  :-)

Take care,
Coop

Well.  Many moons ago I had great aspirations of my buddy fixing up my doors and getting my car in color.  sigh
Anyhow, here we are today.  The car is back in my garage, some other things that needed done are out of the way. i.e. new clutch in the Lotus Exige, LS swap into my 78 Trans Am, making that car drivable... so now we're back to being able to work on the Diablo once again!  ::bounce  ::rocker  ::headbang

Work to make a living is currently busy, but once I get a couple of thing put to bed there, I'll be back on the Diablo real regular.  I've got to restore it back to where it runs again.  Then I'll get it painted and the lights & horn to work.  After that, I think I'll get it inspected.   :)

I'll start posting progress on the build diary 100mpgmotors.com again as I get it back together.  I'll also make those same updates here with links to the new blog entries.

Take care.  Glad to be back!   ::salute

I have an OpticArmor windshield in mine.  Was easy to cut with a jigsaw blade made for cutting plastic.  I made up my own framing to go around the windshield support area so that it will be easily removable if needed in the future.

Here's the one I chose to use in my kit:
CAM931-4    1/4" Thick Windshield    WINDSHIELDS    $520.00

I've been radio silent as I have been building on the Diablo again and not telling anyone.  I'm working on the seat belts right now.  I'll have to shoot some pics of what I have fab'd up for the center bracket to hold the 2 rollers in the top of the center console.
GF did help out with the radiator grills and center rear grill getting cleaned up and I then sprayed them this past Friday.  I got the center rear grill installed for a look.  It came out well enough to stay.  I've got the mesh I'll be installing sometime soon as well that goes inbehind of the grill.

I am posting some progress on the lambo builders group on fb.  But because I have always posted to this thread, I will continue to add updates here as well.  Hope you all are doing well.  I keep wanting "this year to be the year", but feel like I'm getting so much done and so close to paint, that I'll get it plausible this year and start driving it.  ::thumbup

Thanks,
Coop
