Title: g28 inner hood
Post by: Tallon on May 11, 2012, 09:50:47 PM
Did anyone hear anything lately from Bart about the inner hoods?

Yep, I contacted him last week and he told me about some things that have slowed up progress however he's still on track for getting us some panels soon.  From everything I've heard of the quality of his parts.. these will so be worth the wait.  :)

Where do we sign up for one? Or was this a pre order I missed out on?!

You can ask bartman on MM he might make you one who knows
I think the hardest part was just making the modified inner hood, I doubt he's just gonna throw it out once he's made ours.

I don't think he's officially taken any orders yet.  I've tried a couple times to offer a deposit and he's politely turned it down for now.  I'm guessing he's wanting to knock out all the kinks first and turn out a quality panel and then start taking the orders.  Just remember everyone that these are for the G28 bodies and he's starting with an OEM style inner panel and stretching it out to fit our hoods.  This may force you to use original mounting points that will be molded into the hood so you may need to rethink your hinges and hood latches / locations.  Personally I think it's for it if you are early enough along in your build and having a "finished looking" hood will be a nice touch to your project.

I'm first in line since I asked first!  :)

Thanks,

Chris

I talked to him about being the 1st in line since I'd originally asked him to take on this project.  He asked for my address and I get excited every time I hear the Fed Ex or UPS truck in the neighborhood.   ::bounce

Yep... it's time!

Bart contacted me today for my payment and shipping info, so it should be an day now.

The parts looks awesome and they'll be a really nice finish touch on the G28's.  He has a lot of time, materials and money wrapped up in this project so let's make it worth his while and follow through with the purchases.  I feel personally responsible for this project therefore I'll ask that no one splashes these panels, since it's an original part that Bart has made for us.

Be sure to post pictures as you get the panels and mount them to your hoods.  I'm curious to see the different ways that you guys use them with and without internal framework.  I'm also looking for tips from anyone that mounts their hood to open like an original and the type of hinges, shocks and hold down latches they use.  I have at least three different types of hinges here and I'm undecided which set to go with.  ::counfused

:D excited

I really wanted to do the whole area like oem. I am not sure how to match the inner hood to the body where the weather strip would sit but I'm really stuck on doing it. I'm thinking of putting the hood where it should be, turn the body upside down and construct the weather strip flange all around.

Anyone know what kind of latch that is on the left of the pin latch and I'm guessing they're two latches but work at the same time?

My inner hood panel arrived a couple of days ago and I'm really impressed with how heavy it's made and how much it looks OEM although it's been modified for a G28 hood.  Last night I went to my shop and grabbed my hood.  I matched them together and like Tallon said, Bart left plenty of edge on the panel for trimming and fine adjustment.  I'm bonding 1/4" metal plates behind the latch and hinge sections so I can drill and thread the panel. Positive feedback coming for the Bartman.

I would imagine that the two latches are for the primary and safety latches.  Most cars have a two stage latch for safety.

Glad you guys like the part.  USMC_Butler.  You have one already made but I'm out of town until Saturday so it will go out Monday or Tuesday (8/22).  The last time we shot each other emails, I thought it was going to be a little longer and I don't have anyone at the shop that knows how to log onto my UPS account to ship and schedule a pick-up.  My wife usually does that and she's at the beach with me!!

How much are these? Are there any available now?
Are there instructions on attaching them?
Thank you!

Bartman is the only fellow with the molds to make these as far as I know.  You should PM him and ask if he can pull another part for you.  They bond to the underside of the G28 hood and you can reinforce the hinge area with steel for strength but to also give you a place to tap some threads (or weld on a couple nuts) for the hinge bolts.  For hinges I spent a little more but kept it simple and went with a used OEM set ($350 for the pair).

Where'd you pick up the oem hinges?

Where'd you pick up the oem hinges?

A guy from Wisconsin had a wrecked LP640 roadster with less than 7,000 miles.  He decided to sell off as many parts as possible before putting the rest of the car up for sale.  I grabbed the hinges for $350 shipped and he sold the rest of the car the following week.   8)

Yeaa, the same guy I got my door glasses & door rubber from. Dammit, I should have bought the hood hinges when I had the chance. If you ever need your money back, I'm in the market for a set.

I got your PM and I'll see what I can do for you.  I banged up my foot pretty badly and I'm just getting back to work and really behind from being out.  I'll see what I can do.

I'm getting ready to make one of these G28 OE style inner hoods for a friend.  Does anyone else need one while I have the mold out, clean and ready to lay??

I had three of the g28 hoods here and they were all a little different by a 1/4 inch or so.  So, I make the inner a little oversize so you can trim to your hood outer.  It is easier to trim then add to the edge of fiberglass.  The contour and shape are correct.

Fatboyslim, I did not get your PM.  Someone else PM'd me trying to sell me a OE front trunk lid.  I have one(actually several).  The point of this was to modify the OE to fit the G28 front trunk lid/hood as it is longer than OE.  I actually copied the original, cut it into quarters and slid them out to the corners of the G28 lid and then glassed back together and matched up the body work so that unless you have one of each side by side, your can't tell.
