I heard it is easier to do paddle shift setups with tiptronic but I haven't looked into it yet. I wanted the automatic just so I can do that so I'll definitely do it one way or another. I was thinking all of them were tiptronic, not sure now that you say that.
The A* is tiptronic too and it has a sport mode type thing so you can shift it like a manual but with the stick. I'd imagine it could be incorporated with paddles the same way? I guess it's all electronic because the transmission seems pretty simple on the outside, but bunch of wires coming out.

Will you be able to add paddle shifter to the tiptronic?  Let me know if you can so when I get the Passat I will also get one with tiptronic.

LOL  ;D I thought that might be you!

I spoke to John yesterday on the same thing with the transmission and the engines and he told me about a guy that can reprogram the ECU so you should call him up and get that info.

I am just going to buy and 02-03 Passat 2.8 right now to use as a donor.  I did manage to find the V8 here in the states but not at the auction.

Yes sir I got the 2.8 tiptronic it's from a passat, I'm hoping it will all work electronically, I bought the ecu for it as well. I don't know anything about aftermarket eng. management.
I'm also hoping it will hold up to the V8 I've been told it most likely won't but I'm giving it a try anyway, maybe as long as I don't abuse it.

I think the FWD A8 is rare probably not even in the US, it seems most people can't find one. Maybe because of the transmission problems? It seems they even break on the a6's.
I was reading on making it stronger but there's no info out there. All I can find is replacing the reverse/Ddrum with an aftermarket one that uses slightly thicker aluminum.

Edit:
You responded to my other thread I just noticed, yeah that's me but I don't think anyone on there knows anything about it.
I don't think I'd be able to use the 5hp24 anyway as that was the only thing wrong with the car. None of the gears works except reverse lol
I was waiting to see if I can learn a bit more before tearing the car apart but I ended up removing the exhaust, driveshaft, front bumper so far. Should only need to remove a few cables now when I'm ready for it. I'm trying to see how the darn center console comes apart.

Bryan I don't remember if you bought your transmission yet or not but here is a list of the cars that have the one you can use.   To make it even more confusing it’s hard to tell what the differences are in the 5HP-19 transmissions that you find in all of these cars:
Volkswagen Group — longitudinal engine transaxle, front-wheel drive

* 1996–2001 Audi A4 (B5) 2.8 V6
* 1997–2003 Audi A4 (B5) 1.8T
* 1997–1999 Audi A8 (D2) 3.7 V8
* 1998–2001 Audi A6 (C5) 2.8 V6
* 1998–2003 Volkswagen Passat GLS 1.8T
* 1998–2003 Volkswagen Passat GLS V6 2.8L
* 1998–2003 Volkswagen Passat GLX V6 2.8L
* 2003– Volkswagen Passat GL 1.8T

Did you notice the A8 with the front wheel drive?  I have been looking for one of these but I can't find them.. Hopefully this list will help you find a less expensive alternative.

I'm not sure how to fix an automatic but it seems like a shame to tear a part such a nice car. Someone told me to sell if for a few grand and buy another car.

How much did you end up paying for the car?  Don't start falling in love with it, tear it apart already >:(

Car was delivered yesterday...
man this car is nice! picture doesn't show it at all.
there's no dents or scratches the exterior looks like new and all the features the car has is crazy, tires are new. The only problem is it is slow in drive, runs nice in reverse so I guess it's a trans problem. I'm not sure how to fix an automatic but it seems like a shame to tear a part such a nice car. Someone told me to sell if for a few grand and buy another car.

Exactly what autopro said. Don't put a phone number on your listings! You'll get a million calls from tire kickers. I'm not sure about the junk yard but there are people that will pay you for the metal shell and haul it off.

Oh yeah that's the reason I went with it, John talked me into it lol
I still would have gone with the v12 if I had found one. The one I was looking at is gone.

Advertise it on Craigslist and people will come to your place and buy the parts they need.  Once you are done just call a junk yard and they will come get the body, just make sure you don't lose the title or bill of sale.

I think you made a wise choice getting the Audi, for some reason I think it will be much easier to get it running.  Are you going to use all the electrical components from it and the wiring harness?  This is what I am planning on doing.
