Title: JW fiero build. Houston we have a problem!
Post by: Onewickedsvt on September 08, 2012, 07:53:12 AM
Hey guys!

JW murcielago build here, coupe on a fiero.

I can't upload the pics due to the iPad compatibly with the forum software, but anyway, I have a huge problem with alignment.

I clamped the roof and windscreen and front fenders to the front of the car, and it looks good!

But...

The windscreen basically goes all the way down to the brake booster fill up location. It goes nowhere near the fiero frame with the vin number attached to it like g28's, etc.

The reason why it's so far forward is due to the front fender not being center to the wheel any other way as I must follow the break likes from the OEM molded parts.

If anyone would be so kind to pm me their email addy, I can send pics, and possibly upload it to the thead?

Thanks!

I think what you are experiencing is the difference between an OEM body which had a frame designed for it versus the G28 body that was designed around the Fiero frame.  This is why the G28 has a slightly longer nose (the trunk panel is over 2" longer) and this is also how a Maxima windshield is able to be substituted for an OEM windshield.  I think the variation is the length between the centerline of the front wheel to the firewall of the Fiero.  Since this area is not stretched like the rear of the car, you are left with figuring out how to match this length up on the OEM body which is going to be a couple inches off.  You might be forced to actually move the front wheels forward by modifying the frame.  If you modify the front frame, watch your overall wheelbase so your mod's don't affect the rear wheel openings and you'll need to watch out for firewall height clearances.  This is my first stab at diagnosing the problem and maybe others here can help come up with some creative solutions that don't involve altering the front frame.

On a side note, thanks for bringing the Apple compatibility issues to my attention.  I wasn't aware of any incompatibility issues with the Apple OS and the Forum software but I'll look into this and see if there are any patches or plugin's out there that might make visiting here better for the Apple users.  ::thumbup

Hmmm... I have to shop around for a remote resivor brake booster then.

And I guess I have to move the ac stuff, or rather remove it completely and add in aftermarket unit and find a new home for that stuff.

I was wondering how much of a problem this was going to be mounting an OEM styled body on a Fiero.  About two months ago I became so frustrated with the CarKit G28L that I have (quality, fit and amount of rework required) and I considered shooting holes in the body that I have now and start over with a Watson body.  After a lot of thought, I decided to do a hybrid build instead and reuse the parts of the G28L body that are more specific to the Fiero frame and replace as many of the other parts with more accurate OEM styled replacements.  I should be able to swap out the front bumper with no problem since this is everything in front of the wheels which doesn't get into that space between the front wheels and the firewall.  I really wish someone like Watson offered a quality roadster body that combined these things together and you ended up with a G28 style body for a Fiero that had all the little things fixed (bumpers, OEM mounting flanges for grills, rockers, bump removed from the rear quarter, inner wheel lips, gas filler moved to the passenger side, detachable bumpers with bolt flanges etc).   ::counfused

The problems the bottom of windshield tray is ways too far out.

This is my biiiig problem. Move it in towards the dash and the fender is off center.

This is one heck of a predicament.

It looks like your wheelbase is really close so it wouldn't make sense to move your front frame.  If it was me, I'd look at ways of removing as much of the upper Fiero firewall as possible and build my own from tube or square steel.  You'd want to swap out your stock steering column with a modified Sebring column and this will move everything forward and give you some extra leg room.  I'd only remove the top portion of the firewall and use the bottom section as an anchor for my new frame up top.  You might be able to save the pedal mounting points and the mounting point from the steering column.  I would box everything in with a heavy gauge sheet metal to add extra strength and keep the elements out of the passenger compartment.  Now would also be the best time to undercoat everything for noise and corrosion protection or paint and apply a noise + heat shield.

What does others think?

Problem is, the vin # is on that frame.

I cannot "alter the vin" as per the nys penal law.

I'd ask the title department about rules for getting a new VIN and title for an assemble car.  Typically all this requires is receipts and proof of all the parts used and a final inspection.  My car has a new title and VIN from Arizona and it's legally a "2010 Lamborghini Spcon" of which Spcon stands for Special Construction.  If you can't do this in NY, what about taking it to a surrounding state and have a title and inspection done there.  From there all you'd need to do is transfer the title to a NY title and you should be ok.  Maine has some pretty relaxed laws about titles and I've actually used a company in the past called Mainely Titles who helped me get a new title for a car I bought without a title (100% legal and legit).

It looks like when I put my g28 body on a boxster. I felt like I would be driving with my head in the quarter window. I hate to say this, but did you consider building a chassis!

I think it would be less work than reworking everything on the fiero.

In hindsight, after doing all the hacking and mod's on a 25 year old Fiero, I would've started with a custom frame if I had it all to do over again.  Cliff sells a OEM spec frame if you are interested.  It even has all the OEM mounting points for the body panels which would make assembly a heck of a lot easier.

welding it up yourself shouldn't be hard though, few hundred on steel, plans are free
I guess no mounts would be a downside though
