Title: Jets303 Aventador Build
Post by: Jets303 on April 29, 2019, 10:59:04 AM
Hey guys! Have not been on in some time, but I've been a long time member of both Lamboclone and Mad Mechanics. Was one of the very first members of this site back when Chris (NoBull) owned and ran it. I got out of the industry a bit to pursue other hobbies but I missed it enough and well here I am!

I started my replica career with a Murcie Lp640 build that came out pretty awesome! Got it about 75% done and burnt out (like everyone else) but it went to a good home. The guy who bought it owned a body shop so I'm sure its gleaming by now!

I've done a lot of deals with IKR, Murci Me, 6.0 nut, and Adrian Burton. Some of the old school guys who traded parts back when we were building Murci's and Diablos! Hope those guys are well and still active!

Well enough about that, I'm sure you're curious to see my car. I will start from the beginning. I started with an Armstrong chassis that I cut and modified to make work on the Aventador shell. They are solid chassis's that utilize simple yet effective suspensions. I used a Wilwood brake kit all around and am currently building front A arms to replace the factory ones. The rear suspension was stretched and utilizes the big brake kit also.

Im using a Duraflex racing shell and an Audi 4.2l V8 mated to the factory auto trans. You can find those here fairly cheap as I paid $800 for a wrecked car with 107k miles on it. The shell I had shipped from Rhode Island down to Colorado! That was a pain! OEM wheels, OEM exhaust, OEM lights all around. Planning on transplanting the S6 interior for now to get things up and running. About 3 months in and Im moving a lot faster the second time around! Enjoy the pics guys and feel free to ask any questions. Lets keep it educational and uplifting, so many times in this industry it turns into a screaming match.

I am using an Audi 4.2L V8 and transmission from a 2004 Audi S6. Fits in the engine bay nice and snug!

A great looking build and thanks for posting progress pics. I had a few questions if you wouldn't mind.
1. What windshield and door glass are you planning on using with the Duraflex body? Is OEM required?
2. How are you making the S6 transaxle work for rear wheel drive since they were all Quattro in North America? I thought the input shaft was hollow on them vs. solid in the FWD version which made them weak when converted according to info on GT40 forums.

I look forward to see more pics as you progress.

1. The duraflex shell utilizes the Nissan Maxima windshield that is very easy to find! The side windows I will have to use OEM
2. So if you notice on the picture I actually deleted the rear axle in the transmission. Marty Sweatt did it on his MR2 swapped 4.2l and it worked great. The cv axle was hollow but had .25'' wall tubing which is pretty strong so at 350 hp stock, I don't think ill be twisting any steel. (crosses fingers)

Jets,  I will be cutting the quarter windows from a windshield which should have close to the correct curvature.  OEM glass for those two can run north of $1500 a side.  If you have a better idea text me, or share with the group!

In addition, I did restructure my doors to get the glass to go all the way down! ::toothy

I was going to try a few tricks I picked up on shaping Lexan. Don't know if they will work but I will text you if it does. You gonna use a water jet?

Diamond saw.  I was going to see if Colorado waterjet could do it for a decent price (I use them a lot).  If so, I can get them to cut yours as well. :LL:

Post by: Neils88 on April 30, 2019, 10:44:59 AM
I may want to get in on that too if the price is reasonable.  I had planned on cutting the quarter's myself from a windshield.  I managed to get the engine bay glass cut and tempered by a local place for about $250 (usd) each... much better than the $1500 OEM price each. Unfortunately they don't cut curved glass.

So I talked to them, and they will not do it since it is curved.  I will let ya'll know how the diamond cutting goes.  My initial tests were excellent.

Build my front suspension this past weekend. Custom control arms made out of .120 wall DOM. Powdercoated and all new ball joints. New poly bushings also. Feels a lot stiffer.

Motor update: finished up the wiring and should have a cranking motor by end of weekend! I’ll post a vid of it running!

Jets! Project looks great. I do have a question tho. The Duraflex body? Any issues with it? Happy with the work on it? I have heard so many horror stories about their products. Mostly the bumper covers, lip kits ect they offer. Your the first full body I have seen. Making me second guess just doing my rocket bunny fiero. lol.

Hey Craig, thanks! Dude I can’t complain about the shell. It is very uniform and thick all the way around. They applied plenty of gel coat to bodywork and most all my panels line up great. Plus they were awesome to work with, I would recommend them to anyone!

Electric power steering is coming off a Chevy equinox, if anyone is interested in it, pm me

Brakes look a little small behind the wheel but it'll work for now.

Filled in the small gap in the back engine bay area alongside some bodywork

So it’s a complete setup off the 2006 Chevy equinox, runs of the battery and I’m running a pot to control the resistance of the motor. It’s a dial indicator style so if I feel I need more assistance, I just turn the dial up and it’ll give me that. I’m curious to see how it does on high speeds. The hot rod community uses the hell out of them, some guys turn the wheel with their pinky fingers at a dead stop! It’s awesome

Not a ton of time these last two weeks but I did manage to get my engine relay panel built. Motor is officially wired in and I can start it with three wires under the dash area! Mounting the radiators and fans now. They are 3 row's out of a Jeep Cherokee. Some Lambo parts that came in also. Slowly coming along!

Pulled the shell off today to get some final welding done before sand blast and powdercoat. My local sand blaster has a sweet rotisserie for car chassis's. I want to drive it like this for awhile! Should be gone for about 2 weeks so Im going to be finazling wiring and exhaust in the meantime.

Been working on getting the cooling system and power steering done. Unfortunately I had to abandon the bigger Jeep radiators. After changing some body mounts I actually shortened the height between the ground and the rear bat wing. Running some 3 row race radiators off a Honda Civic. Will actually give me more room for the oil cooler and fuel cell.

Also getting ready to start cutting out the grille surrounds that were molded in the shell. I’m running OEM surrounds and OEM grilles. Steady as she goes!

Finished the OEM bumper mold and man that was more glass work then I wanted to do. Came out great though and the mold will last 50 pulls if I needed it too. So had to do some modifying to the front clip since this race shell is about a 15/16th scale to OEM. Cut the front end and widened it 1/2” and reglassed. The OE bumper looks 10x better! Grilles fit perfect and front lip fits perfect! Very happy with it.

Also cut out the rear and started glassing a “pocket” for the grille surround.

***Update***

I couldn't stand looking at those brakes anymore so I upgraded to some Dodge Scat pack rotors and calipers. Significantly bigger rotors and I went from 12'' to 14.5''. They fill the wheel much better! I also cut out the wheel wells as they were funky shaped. I made them fit a little better with a fiberglass lip and some filler. The car drives and moves on its own and its a riot! Absolute blast to drive. The 4.2l V8 screams

I cant get the picture to stay right side up, any ideas?

After talking to the builder of the shell, he told me he stretched the front hood 6'' to fix the flat windshield for the Maxima windshield. I went ahead and cut that off the hood and fixed the bottom of the windshield area. It looks 100 times better in my opinion! Took the car around the block like this, thing freakin moves!

Sorry for not updating guys! Been working on my race car a bunch!

So I am continuing to flange all the body panels and it is starting to really look sharp. I also partnered up with a few forum members on an OEM rear bumper so that fit up will come soon. Glued the OEM under hood to the Duraflex front hood and it really made a tough part! That 3m body panel adhesive is no joke. I have a long winter ahead so I will be going at it pretty hard!

Moving into the front of the car. Was able to get the front hood hinged, using 2000 Pontiac Grand Prix trunk hinges. Work and look like OEM lambo but a fraction of cost. Used the same ones on my Murci build 7 years ago.

I'm also using and Audi latch and cable from the donor S6 I snagged the motor from. Worked good and has a built in limit switch for some front lighting in the trunk area.

The OEM bumper is allowing me to use all the OEM trim work and man it is lining up perfectly! A lot of metal work in that front trunk area but it is looking killer.

Also, I ripped the cut outs out of the OEM lambo box and used them here and holy hell! What a world of difference it makes! They are the vacuum actuated so on idle they are quite but when you crack the throttle, its loud! Not V8 loud but gurgle V10ish sounding! Very happy with it. Just waiting  on finalizing the rear bumper placement so I can finish routing the exhaust onto the OEM tip.

I'm starting to get lambo fever again.  ....I really thought I had put that chapter of my life behind me, went back to building street rods and muscle cars.  Much more profitable but man I like exotic cars.  Again, your build is looking great.  I know what it takes and that's a lot of work.  Keep it up, it'll be worth it.

Worked on the car today a bit. Lowered the mount for the fill neck. The height that came with the shell is impractical. It was about 1'' from the gas door. Also been playing around with some 3d printing for the push button start.

In case anyone was wondering, I used Rondo to skin the glass. Its resin thats mixed with bondo 3:1 ratio. Makes for a brushable lightweight paste thats easy to sand. Made my life easy on the corners.

Update on the car! Cut off the Duraflex rear bumper and am beginning the flanging process for the OEM copy of the rear bumper I received from Wayne. Thanks again! Fits great, will need to widen the rear quarter panel about 1'' on each side but no big deal. Also managed to score some OEM scoops from Wayne, size comparison in the pictures.

Also lining up the front end with glass and body work. Front hood opens with ease and lines up great. Have the OEM under hood glued together and body worked and it looks amazing. Getting primer on the front end this weekend. Slowly getting there!

Body worked the under hood and hit it with some primer. Looks OEM! Frame was right before paint. Working on getting the whole front clip in primer. Glued a piece of 1/4'' aluminum plate behind the threads and heli-coiled the holes for the bolts. Works great.

Ive been working on getting all the new parts flanged up and bodyworked. Spent all day in the garage today. Denver got about 2 feet of snow today so it was a perfect day to stay in a heated shop and fiberglass all day! Also worked on the rear bumper flanges, all in all it came out ok. I'm not super happy with the angle of the side scoop but getting the bigger OEM one to line up to the duraflex line was hard so I just made my own flange and made the line work.

Nice work Jets, is that the same 4.2L as the one in the A8 (D2)? I also bought an audi for it's 4.2 V8, I got the idea from watson he did the same. But somehow I was convinced to toss the trans and go for a tiptronic from a VW, it's smaller and bolts right up but I learned the two will not talk to each other even with non-quattro PCM. I assume the aventador has about the same space back there as the murcie, do you have to do anything other than cap it off? It's hard to remember, it's been awhile, but I thought it presented some issues.

I believe most of the 4.2's were the same minus timing and fuel maps with the exception of the R8 4.2 which had different heads and intake mani. So I used the factory auto transmission which was tiptronic. You do have to retain the TCM with the swap and all the speed sensors with it otherwise it does throw codes and it will go into a 4th gear limp mode. The most crucial of the speed sensors was in the rear axle so I had to keep that sensor and weld on a gear with sensor on. It was a PITA

If I had to do it again, I would have went O1x 6 speed manual. No issues, just shift and go.

I dont necessarily have a writeup for it but you are welcome to message me and I can answer any questions you may have! I just want to go on record to say that I highly discourage using the electronic shifting stock tiptronic trans. It was a literal nightmare getting it wired and shifting right. Even now, If I slam the pedal down, it will down shift abruptly and spin tires very badly. Sometimes even cruising it will down shift with a jerk motion. I think its because it is used to the heavy S6 (4100lbs) as apposed to my 1900lb chassis. In any event, I am still on the fence about switching to a 01x 6 speed manual.

Thanks for the offer, I will be in touch once I get the donor. Was your wiring nightmare because you used a different wiring harness? My plan is to use the donor wiring and electronics.
Title: Re: Jets303 Aventador Build
Post by: Jets303 on October 13, 2021, 10:24:20 AM
I wish it was that easy lol. I of course used the factory wiring harness but Audi, being the geniuses they are, figured out a way to tell the ECM and TCM that they were no longer in the vehicle (series of sensors in the motor mounts etc.). It causes an IMMO scenario. Nothing works. No spark, no fuel, no shifting. You have to "Kill IMMO", its a program that Audi dealers have. Nobody local can do it but I found a gentlemen in New Hampshire that is an Audi expert. He was able to program my TCM and ECM to kill IMMO. While he was programming, he went ahead and added a stage 2 tune, more aggressive timing and fuel curves.

The major problem with the trans is that it relies on 2 rear speed sensors to make sure the front drive train and rear drive train are in sync. You cant use the rear sensor because it is in the diff but you can use the mid sensor (the one I'm using). This at least allows the TCM to function with a signal. If you burn tires (easily done) the "rear" of the vehicle isn't moving as fast as the front so the TCM will take power away from the front to add to the rear. It jerks the trans and makes it down shift. If you ease into the power, its runs fine but sometimes you just want to light em up!

Another problem I have is that they don't make a LSD for this trans. When I punch the throttle, one tire will spin while the other one kinda skips. I don't plan on doing donuts but even merging onto a freeway or something could get dangerous.
Title: Re: Jets303 Aventador Build
Post by: LP700-4 on October 13, 2021, 01:15:16 PM
Thanks for the detailed reply. That does explain why it is a PIA very clearly. I will have to rethink this transmission as a donor. If you do go the standard route, how would you deal with the shifter since this car was never designed with a standard.

I could run shifter cables fairly easy. The 6 speed 01x has a huge aftermarket for parts including LSD's. I'll run the Auto until it causes a major issue and then I will more than likely replace the trans.

Have you come across a direct drop in LSD for the 01X? I have seen some that can be modified to work

Post by: Jets303 on October 28, 2021, 10:52:39 AM
I know they make them for the O1E and the Audi guys modify them all the time for the O1X.

I might have a solve for the jerk on my transmission though. I forget that Audi had an S mode on the gear selector. When I drop it down into that gear, it doesn't freak out. Its gear 2 in my push button shifter. I may reprogram my gear selector to use S for my D gear.

You have to get into MMA's! You'll never look back. They are insanely strong and much better then the body panel adhesives from 3M. They are used in chassis building to glue aluminum together, NASA uses it, its huge in Hollywood. It will literally never fail, I trust it more then some welds on aluminum lol
