No problem.  That's the purpose of this forum.  Post a pic of your shifter and the cables on the trans.  That may help us better clarify the adjustments also.

The hole is rectangular.  Start with the cable tightened at the mid point and see how it shifts.  Then move your adjustment one way and check the shift.  If it doesn't improve, then move it the other way.

So I took a better look at the place where cable is mounted on the transmission like it is shown in View A. That mount has a square hole in it and it will allow for the cable to be moved front/back a little bit. So I guess I just loosen that bolt and play with that distance. I suppose I need to mount it as far back as possible so rod can move more? Car goes in all gears except when it's in reverse it doesn't go in reverse it ends up in the first gear and goes forward. Does that mean I have to mount it as far back as possible?

Cable B that is attached to the linkage that pulls the shift rod in and out is the one you need to adjust.  Does the cable have an end on it that can be screwed on and off to length or shorten the cable?  If not then you have to adjust the nut where it attaches to the mount.  I would adjust at the transmission end if possible.  Some of them had a slotted hole in the part on the transmission that can be used for adjustment. If you use the method described in the Fiero manual where you put pins in the aligning holes to adjust the cables it should be right.  If not then some fine tuning will be necessary.

Is cable b selector cable? One on the left side when you are sitting in the driver seat? That is the one that moves when I push down/forward for the reverse that is why I assumed that one needs adjustment. From your pictures it seems like it's the other one that needs adjusting or I could be wrong? So do I just turn that big nut where the cable is mounted? To me it seems like that nut will only secure the cables more...it seems like it won't do anything to the end of that cable but I could be wrong? I really appreciate your help with this.

Adjustments are made at the transmission ends.  You need to adjust Cable "B".

That is the selector cable right? One on the left? Do you know if the bolt that needs adjusting is the one that's by where the cables are mounted on the transmission or the one that's by the shifter?

Reverse on a 4 speed is on a separate gate from the other gears and it sounds like your shifter is not moving over to select that gate.  The cable that moves the shifter shaft in and out will need to be adjusted to move the shaft more in that direction.  I can't remember which way that is as all the ones I have dealt with were 5 speeds.

Proper cables are installed. Car goes into every gear and drives good and shifter also moves into reverse too..at least it seems like it but the car doesnt go in reverse...it slips into first gear i think...so shifter moves smoothly and everything..it doesnt get stuck in reverse or anything like that.

Check that the proper cables are installed to the correct levers.  Neutral gate (back and forth sideways) should move the shaft in & out.  Hope this helps.
01

1. Install selector shift lever cable and route as shown in Figure 1.

NOTICE: - ROUTE SELECT CABLE DOWN BEHIND HEAT SHIELD.
- DO NOT INSTALL CABLE THROUGH HINGE MOUNTED HOOK.
- TAKE-UP EXCESS CABLE LENGTH TOWARD LEFT TO ASSURECLEARANCE TO EXHAUST PIPE.
- BE SURE TO PULL CABLE INSULATING SLEEVES DOWN TO THE END OF CABLE.

2. Install cable at shifter assembly.
3. Connect the ball stud and transmission selector shift.
4. Install front floor console support panel hole retainers.
5. Position the carpet into the front floor console carpet retaining clips.
6. Install the two rear front floor console support retaining bolts. Tighten bolts to 1.6 N-m. (14 in.lbs.).
7. Connect the E.C.M. electrical connectors.
8. Install E.C.M.
9. Install console trim pad. Tighten bolts to 1.6 N-m. (14 in.lbs.).
10. Install front floor console accessory switch mount plate.
11. Install console transmission shift plate. Tighten bolts to 1.6 N-m. (14 in.lbs.).
12. Install ash trays.
13. Install shift knob.
14. Install negative battery cable.

Fiero transmission not going in reverse
« Reply #1 on: June 03, 2017, 06:36:07 PM »
I have a 4spd manual transmission and after installing extended shifter cables car doesn't want to go in reverse for some reason. There is a big nut where the shifter is on each cable and then where they mount on the transmission. Are these for adjustments or something? Can I turn these and fix this issue? I am not a transmission guy so I have no idea what to do or what it could be. Please help :)
