Every Bear Claw FMVSS latch on every motor vehicle in the world can be traced back to Southco. If you are willing to order from them in quantity, the price goes way down. If not, they are available from Austin Hardware and that $50 latch is still under $10.

VW front hood latches are pretty strong, I bought one for sample but hard to pull. so I got a pair out of Saturn Sky or pontiac Solstice rear deck lid convertible latches
