Any front wheel drive engine/transmission combination could be used. If you use the engine and transmission from the same car the ECU should work too. Most front wheel drives are transverse as are the Fiero and MR2. If you want longitudinal you could look at the Chrysler Concorde and other models with that same drivetrain. Another, more expensive, option would be the Audi. They are also longitudinal but you will have to find one that is front wheel drive only. If you go longitudinal with a manual shift transmission you won't have to worry about the ECU operating the transmission and you can use any engine you want that you can adapt to the transmission.
