If you decide to go standalone ECU, I suggest Haltech. I have this mini tutorial.
http://jimdinner.wordpress.com/2012/07/26/haltech-setup-step-by-step/
As far as joining the engine to the transmission, that easy.
This is a WORD document that has my notes on the adapter plate, flywheel and clutch that I am using.
http://stweb.peelschools.org/sssweb/TTI-WEB/cars/Adapter%20Notes%20and%20Tips.doc

I have done this when looking for an engine;
Go on a local 'buy and sell' website and search for BMW stuff, seat, switches, mirrors..... Often you will find one or two guys that buy and part out old BMW's. Tell them what you are looking for.
I have also gone to local garages that specialize in BMW repair and ask if they know where you can find one.
I found three engines/ two cars this way. 1st was $500, 2nd was $600 and the 3rd (just engine) was $700.

wow a 5L that isn't far and it runs and drives
KY  BILL OF SALE/PART ONLY/NO TITL
but I'm not eligible to bid on whatever that is
I would be using it only for parts anyway so I don't see why I'd need the title
 Lot #  20271262

looks like from CA it would cost at least 1k to ship a car :(

 >:( Then your probably didn't want to buy from them anyway. Maybe it's the same person selling the "LP640 LP670 not sure"? And they aren't sure what the answers are to your questions.  ::toothy

Maybe you can work out a package deal with someone selling the engine on eBay... I doubt V12's are flying off the shelf and they would be more willing to work with you.

What's the most you are paying for your transaxle after adapting it to your engine and running it? I was going the cheap route but the 5 speeds are getting impossible to find.
Thanks

I would keep looking, I spent a few months looking and found one about an hour south of my location. I paid 600$ and parted of the transmission, interior and whole car for 750$. The car paid for itself and some!

I dont know if Adrian Burton is still offering them but his package IMO is a no brainer. I just got all the parts in for my swap and should be rolling by early August. Everything bolts up perfectly.
