What handles are people using on the exterior of the car? I seen the c3 corvette is a similar design. It appears to be a bit to large but I wonder if it can be reworked to fit...
-
It seems like the oem handle is simple to make and the dimensions for it are all over the place so why not
An alternative for the interior would be nice, though, and it looks like something like this would probably work. Can't tell how big it is, though.
-
Ill take measurements and post few pics of mine, yes they are very simple to make ,,, I bought mine from Lambochic over on MM but after I got them it was like , "why didn't I just make these?" but I did not have measurements etc...
-
I think the measurments I have are from murcie-me, a lot of his older stuff is still under the pile at MM. Including the pocket the latch sits in. I'd like to know what is needed to make the actual mechanism, though.
-
jb1, thank you!

Good find Tallon! Maybe Mike will move that over here for a better local reference! ::thumbup
-
found it
this is for narrow g28, oem would be wider.
from murcie me as well I'm guessing correct me if I'm wrong
(http://oi48.tinypic.com/2qdr13n.jpg)
Ok it took awhile for me to search for this.. do you get the circle in there with a "Freud Round Nose Bit"?
-
::salute
You need a ball nose endmill. Clamp the part in a vise and use a drill press to create the dimple. Or use a bridgeport style mill if you have access to one.
-
That's what I was looking for thanks
$26 at mcmaster
everywhere else expensive O_O
-
I need oem style! Help!
-
::scratch that is oem it's just that the oem shoulder is a little wider
all other measurements are correct
oem even has the angle
(http://oi47.tinypic.com/2rm6xs7.jpg)
-
I see several ways to make this design better but over all very functional,
-
;)
I programmed the handle real quick last night. You actually need a 5/8" endmill. A 1/2" endmill will cut all the way through the 3/16" plate to reach a 1/2" wide dimple. I will post a side view comparison pic just in case there's any confusion.
-
this is a side cut away view.
-
Aww I already bought a 1/2" one
need to make a a smaller diameter dimple now
that's all I was thinking yesterday that it seems like it would be a deep dimple compared to the pictures. i should have known
-
Ah sob! You don't waste any time! Maybe you can cancel the order...? Or change it to 5/8"?
-
I wish I tried ebay first... $7... anyway I guess I'll have both now, don't know what I'll ever use it for but oh well
darn mcmaster and their fast shipping! lol
-
It makes nice concave chamfers on drilled holes. Or buy a mill to use your new tooling :) Your already in $33, what's another $6k?
-
I didnt use an endmill. I just drilled a hole in the surface (not all the way through) larger than what I wanted the dimple size to be. I filled the hole woth bondo, and before it cured i pushed a large glass marble into the bondo. When it cured, I removed the marble and was left with a perfect smooth dimple. I then block sanded the surface of the handle to remove the extra bondo that pushed out around the marble and was done.
-
Genius ! I will use an endmill because I've lost my marbles ::bounce
-
Good to know if the endmill doesn't work. It's not carbide or anything special so it might not
-
Murci-Me, I like the marble idea but I have an end mill. Tallon, take your end mill bit and barter it at a machine shop. I'm sure that they will swap the machine work for your end mill bit. (I would) Jim
-
Good to know if the endmill doesn't work. It's not carbide or anything special so it might not
You don't need carbide to cut steel... Most drill bits are made of the same high speed steel as your endmill is made of.
-
Might forget about the other measurements, John Watson posted this of his REAL handle.
In other words, Murcie-me's are wrong
-
I dont know much about the murcies details ,but I worked on Nissan GTR today and had this kind of door handle.

Mine are "wrong" because they are made to fit the G-28 (same as yours). Good luck fitting an OEM shape and size handle on a G-28 door :) (dont you think there was a reason I made my own instead of using an OEM handle, whether original or replica?)
-
the top edge of the door an rear quarter is smaller on G28 than the real car so a real door handle or real size will eat up the whole top edge

I hope you know that I know that. Why do you think I'm trying to make it wider for the bat wing notch?
Why would you need to make the handle longer? I wasn't talking about width. I didn't say Width anywhere in my post. The image shows length. it was a madmech link so I changed it.
I'm just pointing out that they aren't the right dimensions at all, unless it for some strange reason depends on the year of murcielago...
-
Technically the g28 size should be shorter if you scaled the handle down proportionally to reduce the width. Either way, I doubt anyone will ever notice. I'm just thankful that people post their design and dimensions. ::sun
-
Yeah I meant his were longer not shorter. Didn't remember why it wasn't right but I made them awhile back and they didn't look right at all. long and skinny.. (As MurcieMe said: there's kit cars then there are replicas)
The width isn't much difference but I'd rather keep oem length.
Shulze I believe you made the width oem size I guess we'll have to shave some off... but they're so clean :(
-
Tallon, I made yours with the narrow width to fit the g28 doors. I have a set that are oem size if you end up needing them.
-
Ooh ok I didn't check but in your pm I thought you said 1" probably by accident :D
I probably won't need oem size I thought about it for awhile but it seems like too much trouble to modify the whole sides of the car.
-
Did anyone notice the finger dimples under the OEM handle. The little details like that are pretty cool. ::LAMBO

I guess its a matter of picking your battles. If you want to build a replica, the G28 is not the platform to do it. Yes, there are minor inconsistencies with my build compared to an OEM car. The door handles would have been way to much work to change. I made them as close as possible to OEM while still fitting the G28 door. If anybody wants to come see my car, my door is always open. If picking it apart because of minor details makes you feel better about your own build, then by all means do it.
I dont cars how many notches people put for their batwings, how they worry the hood is to long, the roof is to short, the firewall is in the wrong location, etc, the best you can ever be with a G28 is a "close" replica.
I have never come on this or any other forum and bragged about my car. I hear people praise it, and I appreciate that. I also hear people pick it apart, and thats fine as well. Like I said back on MM three years ago, whenever anybody gets their car done and wants to compare it side to side with mine, I welcome the challenge. I'm not saying my car is the best out there, or the best there ever will be, but it is painted and driveable, with a full interior and everything working as it should.
I have watched people for years and years building their G28's, but I have never seen one completed and driving (with the exception of LamboJayso). Like I said i the begining of this post, you have to choose your battles. You could litterally spend 10 years and over 100K on these cars if you stress over every little detail. Even if you were to address and correct them all, at best (once again) you would have a "close" replica.
-

Chris
Yes, I haven't figured out how to program that yet. ::counfused
-
I never said you thought yours was best, you seem to get a lot of information from the little I said. but again I wasn't talking about the width which is what you keep referring to for some odd reason.
I post about the handle because you claim to get the measurements from oem just to find out that you didn't. That's not picking anything apart.
I recall you even said once that oem handles don't have the finger slots underneathe...
What about the windshield wipers, there's kitcars then there's replicas, according to you, when other wipers were posted. (compared to yours) but it doesn't make sense when neither of us will have accurate wipers.
And there are no more than 2 completed g28s? I've seen many..
-
Well I have'nt seen any completed of the ones that were started on the forum(s) years ago. LamboJayso never had a build diary that I remember, he joined MM after his car was pretty much complete. Who else has completed a car that daily driveable? Yes, i've seen many completed G28's as well, the ones Steve from Tri-G had is what sold me on having a car. Who else who has started a build diary either here, on MM or Kitcentral and has finished their car within the last 5 years?
Windshield wipers? Mine is exact, ask anyone who has seen it. It took alot of work (about 1 month) and alot of trips to the dealership, but its done and 100% exact and accurate.
I'm going to the Lambo dealership tomorrow, i'll verify the handle dimensions and location.
-
Problem is most of them don't come to the forums at all. Like ralley who only posts on youtube.
lamboreplica had been making them before he recently started posting on mm. besides, there's never been this many people building them. You think most people here will fail? The only thing in the way is time. kitcentral has always been a diablo forum, madmech not many murcies there either.
I go by what you've shown us not what I haven't seen
did you redo the wiper?
and john has his own oem murcie (not copy) so how would his dimensions be wrong?
-
No, I dont think most people here will fail, but only time will tell who succeeds. Theres a reason that only 3% of the builds started actually get completed. Throw enough time and money at any project and it will get done, but those two things are not the easiest of hurdles for most builders.
Yes, I re-did my wiper arm. I went to the dealership about 3 months ago when Digibeam came to visit. I took alot of pictures and dimensions from a LP640 that was in the showromm, and built from that. Everything had to be fabricated, no donor parts would work.
Alot has changed on my car since it was last seen on the other forums. Windshield wiper, glass engine cover, new LP670 style engine cover, Audi A4 front air-ride suspension, new door cards, new center console, new guage assembly, radiator relocations, new headlights, shiftkit, etc. Not to mention the LP670 changeover is almost complete.
-
Well that's cool then.
A4 air ride I wonder if my a8 has that :S I'm still finding about what features the thing has and what I could use out of it. Not so sure about air ride though that must be in newer models.
-

Ok then.. what about those Reds? ::beers
I'm glad to see that you guys reached a mutual understanding and we can move on. Mike, I'm curious to see what you found out about the dimensions of the OEM door handles, I'd like to make mine as close to OEM "as functionally possible" and if you could share the actual dimensions, that would be very helpful.
Thanks,
Chris

IDK if the A8 has it. I bought mine on Ebay, it feels much firmer than the coilovers I had on there before, much better handling and ride height adjustment all in one. I'll look for the link to the system and post it here.
-
This is not the exact one, but very similar. The kit I got had the correct ends for mounting, and was only about $600.

Hey my car is driveable and almost in paint! But you see Mike its because of small snobby remarks that you see on these forums that I have chosen to keep the build progress to myself and close friends. I mean come on....door handle size?!?
-
I understand completely. Yours is one build that I enjoy watching progress, I cant wait for you to paint it!!!!
-
Here is some pictures and measurements of the OEM interior door handle I received in the mail last week. This should be the same for both passenger and driver and also the engine hatch

Discussion continued on Dustin's thread, Alan is making them

I'm not sure If I should post here or Dustin's thread. The buckets are getting better quality as I progressively get better at moulding parts. It's hard to get the epoxy mixed, poured and allow it to degas in a 3 minute window. I also found that there is a post cure process possible that I plan to try this weekend. I'll post results after words. My goal is to make the part visually perfect, yet have the strength to hold up to years of service.
-
I ended up abandoning the original material to make handles. I now have some new material and new molds. Here are some of the recent parts. Ignore the finger prints in the silver handle, it was just a test run ::toothy There are a few orders to fill, afterwords these will be available to whomever.
-
Oh and the trunk latch handle. These will be black on the future parts
-
Don't think I've ever seen the trunk handle O_o this below the dash?
-
Oh they look so nice :drool can't wait to get a couple of them!!! ::toothy
-
Don't think I've ever seen the trunk handle O_o this below the dash?
Located on the driver knee panel, sorry RHD , but the same... :)
-
Have you any idea on the pricing????
-
These parts look awesome Schulze. I would be a buyer for sure if I didn't already have an OEM set sitting here. :(
Chris
-
What is the reason you are going with resin/plastic Alan? Aren't the original parts aluminum? Are you just trying to keep the cost down? Will they be durable enough?
-
String- Thanks for the picture!
Adrian- I'm thinking $50 a piece shipped. With a minimum order of 2 handles.
BigPines- The door handles are originally aluminum and The hood/trunk release is ABS. Cost is exactly the reason I'm using plastic. This new material cures like ABS and is very durable. I did distructive testing ;D
I'm trying some different finishes for the door handles like the silver one pictured. Next try will be wrapping the handles with brushed aluminum appearance vinyl and also wrapping them in carbon fiber.
Dustin & No Bull- Thanks for the complements!
-
Sweet! I want mine already.
-
Yours are almost finished ::thumbup
-
I have to say they look absolutely spot on , very well made . The original plastic handles I bought didn't have the hole in the side of the body to insert the cable roll pin and that is why the lever has an open slot (which is where they were known to break ), the hole was added for the metal levers. . Do you think it would be worthwhile extending the ribs in the lever and bridging the gap to strengthen that area.
-
Good point. I considered that but figured there must be a reason it was designed that way unlike the door handle style. Could you move the hole back about 1/4" by drilling a new hole? Do you have a picture of how the cable attaches to the pin?
I'd hate to scrap the mold that I just made ::duh
-
The fitting is the same as front on view '8.14.17' on page 4 , the cable has a rather bulky end fitting so is a bit tight on space. I didn't want you to bin the mould - I was hoping you were at a r&d stage .... :'(
-
SchulzeA, where are you on these now? I'm pretty sure to be a buyer of 3. I'd like to see where you end up with the aluminum look.
-
I received mine on Thursday and they are perfect! ::thumbup Mine are not painted because I asked him not to. :santa
-
any word on pricing?

The handles are coming along nice. I should have the current orders done this week. I also have trim rings for the shifter plate. $20 + shipping.
Handles are $50 each with a minimum order of two.

Ill take 2 exterior door handles. please send me pictures and prices please.

Sorry I don't have anymore made. I seen cementhead is selling one of my sets on eBay though.
-
An update for those who ordered inner door handles. Something went wrong with my plastic mix which caused the plastic to swell and adhere to the molds, ruining them. I just finished new molds and will have a second set done tomorrow. No one has complained about the wait but I like to keep people updated.
For those looking to order. I'm going to finish the current orders before taking on any more at this point. I'll post a update when more handles are available. ;)
-
Wait times never bothered me but updates are nice :)
bummer about the plastic
-
What type of release are you using?, sometimes the release can actually cause the reaction if it isnt completely neutral to the mold and the cast medium.
also, did you bake out the mould after it was made?
-
Frekote release. The silicone mold material doesn't call for a bake cure process.
-
silicone moulds should all be post cured for a few hours at around 400 degrees to assist with the
"silicone matrix cross-linking", and also to assist in compression setting.
the silicone will still shrink up to 4% after it has been initially cured, and when a two part plastic starts to cure it releases a lot off heat that could force a post cure on the inner portion of the mould causing both sections to bond or fuse, specially if the release has not been renewed each time.. or is silicone based itself.
another issue can be humidity or water in the components of the plastic, too much of one part over the other or cross contamination and last.... age of material, once opened shelf life degrades exponentially regardless of what it suggests on the label.
just my personal experience...
-
Im looking for all the interior and exterior door handles. If any are available please let me know.
