Thanks. Looks like great information!
If I don't have time to do it right, when will I have time to do it over?

Murci-Me, yep that is what I was looking for. Thanks. The video I posted above shows them in action.

Chris, I know you have been working on that. It sounds like you have done a great job. I will look forward to that thread.

I just finished taking pictures of my LP640 tail lights and all the wiring.  I have a couple days off this week and I plan on doing a detailed post for the tail lights, side markers, reverse lights in the rear grill and the third brake light on the roadster.

I tried to use OEM connectors whenever possible (mostly Audi part numbers) so everything could be unplugged later on for maintenance or replacement and the connections would look finished.

Well the taillight turn signals are wired from the factory to flash in unison and not sequential, so does that answer your question?

Anyone know of a video that shows the tail lights in operation. I am particularly interested in the turn signals. I'm not sure if they all flash at the same time or they are sequential. I am also interested in the color of the bulbs.

Mike

Edit: Apparently they flash in unison. I did find this video where the trun signals can be seen briefly at :55.

I have used Caspers Electronics Weatherproof connectors for all connector needs for new wiring and replacing connectors where you don't have matching connector halves.
I got mine at Summit Racing.  Get a big box or two.  They get used up fast.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/cei-103005/overview/

These connectors are like the connectors used by GM.  They have rubber seals for water and dirt protection.

Also found at Jegs

A member messaged me today and suggested that the connection is for the side markers which would make sense.  I'm assuming that these are simple power feed wires out to the side markers so they turn on with the rest of the lights.

I suppose that now the search switches to connectors for the side markers so that a harness can be made to connect these to the tail light connector.  This would be reapplied to the front markers and I'd run these off of the head light assemblies.

Hi, I'm pretty sure that connector is only on the L/H light and is to supply power for the number plate lamps . The wire should be the same colour and therfore have continuity with two centre bulb holders-tail lights.
Cheers
Matching connector would be 1J0 973 702

I looked and the small connector is actually on both tail lights.  Anyone have any idea what this extra connector is for?

Thanks,

Chris

The parts that I ordered are starting to come in and I can confirm a positive match for the two plastic housings.

Horns - 4D0971992
LP640 Tail lights - 1J0-973-835

The blade connectors that go inside these housings are larger than connectors I ordered so I'm forced to buy the VW connectors at $.60 each. PN# N-906-844-05

The grommets I bought appear to work fine and as soon as I get the wire and connector stuff worked out, I'll assemble mine and document the process here.

I don't know how I missed it but there is one more connector on the tail lights besides the 10 pin connector that we figured out previously.  The female socket part number appears to be 1J0-973-702 (I'm posting a picture of it).  These are also around $8.50 each and they use the smaller sized blade connector inside the socket.

Does anyone know what this connector is for?  Mine is tied off to the harness therefore I'm wondering if this is an optional connector for rear fog lights or something.  If this is the case, I'll either wire mine with my brake lights or with a strobe that I plan on running for the head lights (Pace car style).

Thanks,

Chris

Im in, whats your Paypal? ::beers

I'm sending you a private message so my email address isn't shown in the thread.  Believe it or not, there are programs called "email bots" that use guest access and collect emails from the forums.  This email information is then sold to spammers who then turn around and annoy the heck out of you.   ::pirate
